Roadhogs

10 March 2014, 14:22
South African drivers have GOT to be the worst among all nations - once in a while I have to venture out to do some shopping, and every time I go out on to the road, I'm not certain that I (and my car) will return in one piece...

My late father taught me to drive while still an early teenager, and the old man was an absolute martinet when it came to road safety.

The day I got my first licence he said to me: "So, I suppose you think you know it all?  Well, let me tell you something - from today you will find out how little you really know and your real learning starts when you're on your own.  Road signs are not there to make the place look untidy and the rules of the road are also there for a specific purpose - ignore any one of them and you will find yourself in trouble, for everything you do - and the consequences thereof - will be YOUR responsibility. And remember - you'll be driving for the other bloody fool on the road.."

It seems many people think they have bought the road along with their vehicles, hence being free to be rude, totally lacking in road manners towards other motorists. I've often hears that older drivers ought to be tested every 1 or 2 years, but it is NOT they that need to be retested, for they already have had many years of experience on the road; it is these young hotheads who sem to be of the opinion that they are the kings of the road and that they are experts - well, not so.

It is a fact that a bit of common courtesy towards other road-users would go a long way towards fewer accidents, but then, who the hell really cares?  Certainly not many do so nowadays...
