So, thank goodness the embarrassment that was SA Idols S8 is done and dusted.
Really M-net, if you plan to have another season of Idols then it needs some drastic changes.
1. The judges.
Randall and his “I’m too good to be here” attitude is not only getting boring it’s downright rude and uncalled for. If he DOESN’T want to be there then he should quit and let someone else take over.
Gareth and his drooling over girls and his quasi-controversial comments are painful and tedious and Unathi with her simpering and overblown, OTT antics are just embarrassing to watch.
2. The themes and song-choice
We’ve had the same themes season after season and heard the same songs over and over again ad infinitum ad nauseum. If I never hear Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” or R Kelly’s “I believe I can fly” again it’ll be too soon. Adele should similarly be castigated for being responsible for the assaults on my senses this season.
3. The venue
The teatro at Mosaiek (or however the fuck it’s spelled) is a horrible venue. It’s too small and far too pokey for Idols. It needs a decent stage and a venue with decent parking facilities.
4. The voting audit
Do you think the audience is STOOPID??? GIVE US THE VOTING STATS. We are the voters and we are entitled to know how they were made up. Proverb’s sweeping statement of this being ‘the most popular season yet’ is simply not good enough.
5. The Wooden Mic
Do away with it. It’s not funny. It’s not clever. It’s excruciatingly embarrassing and, in this year’s case, just plain tacky. Not cool.
6. The Facebook page
Look, every year fans have a war of words but it’s usually harmless fun. This year, however, outright racism reared it’s ugly head and caused a lot of people, myself included, to distance ourselves from Idols as the fans were out of control. The Facebook page needs a moderator who can be objective and can delete hate speech as it occurs.
If you are planning to have another season, PLEASE address these issues as a lot of fans have been lost in your poor and rather obvious attempt at having a ‘free and fair’ Season. The audience is not stupid and quite frankly I find it insulting that you think we are.
