SA Idols embarrassing

05 June 2012, 13:25
There is a fundamental problem with the judges on our South African version of Idols. I don’t know about anybody else but they simply embarrass me, excruciatingly so.

My wife and I are hooked on American Idols and we’ve spent many hours in happy enjoyment watching the series. We were hoping to feel the same level of enjoyment from the SA version but we just cannot get past the ridiculous and down-right stupid and rude behaviour of the present three judges.

   Here’s the rub.

Last night I watched a young girl who was very attractive and confident and was sure she was headed to stardom. Before we were allowed to hear her sing though we were treated to a mock ad advertising her fictitious soon-to-be-released CD. It then became apparent when she finally did her audition that the girl was hopelessly deluded as far as her singing abilities were concerned.

So in fact they were attempting to humiliate the girl even before we got to hear her audition, no-doubt thinking they were having playful fun. I found it distasteful but not nearly as distasteful as watching the judges crying tears of laughter at all people who cannot sing, often leaving the poor sods on the performance floor looking on with bewilderment at the merriment and guffaws from the judges. One was so confused by the judge’s ambiguous reaction he had to go back and ask again what was their decision.

This is just stupid, and I mean really stupid. The entertainment is delivered from the person auditioning, not from the judges who seem to suck the focus away from the person to themselves screeching and slapping each other on the back.

All I can think of as the person stands there in a confused state is how far did they travel to come there today? Maybe they have a sick child at home or an ailing parent and no matter how deluded, had a little bit of a dream and they are met with not a respectful panel of judges who are firm and although amused, maintain their composure, but instead a trio of howling idiots who really should know better. It’s like little kids in a class who just cannot refrain from giggling and it’s not an edifying sight. The contestants put themselves into a demeaning position by coming there to audition with no singing voice so to demean them even further is serious overkill.

But this lot want to go even further, setting up each terrible applicant with interviews and further attempts to humiliate them. It is just so pathetic. On top of all that we have the very obvious modus operandi of Randall Abrams who has been told to be the naysayer...knowing full well that applicants can be passed by just 2 votes he fakes his disapproval even when the candidate is, to anyone with an IQ over 15, an obvious choice to go through.

All this is just too painful to watch and until they put 1st class judges into SA Idols we’ll be switching off.

Majority poverty

Being a majority has its advantages and disadvantages, based on various aspects of demographics the citizenry. As far as services are concerned it will always be the minority who will benefit most from government as their numbers can be serviced with the least of money, amenities in their areas will last longer be kept in working order better because of the low demand for it, while on the other hand in the areas of majority it is the excessive usage of services which causes numerous breakdowns and eventually no services. Read more...
