I fear that SARS is going "over the top" with their tax collection frenzy.
From what I understand, employees at SARS are now receiving bonuses when achieving targets for "tax collection" - every year this target is increased and private sector SMME taxpayers are finding it more and more cumbersome to claim expenses.
While the increase in fuel, tollfees, electricity, etc is most certainly putting final nails in the coffin of this critical (job creation) business sector, along comes SARS and makes it more difficult them to survive.
I help 10 Small/Medium enterprises with their taxes on an informal basis. In 2012, I had 3 queries from SARS on office expense claims. In all cases, all expenses claimed, were allowed after providing the information requested. Now, in 2013, all 10 enterprises were queried !! (including ones on which no problems were found last year !).
Yes, SARS will come and justify that they are allowed to do it and that "the law this and that...". They should actually be allowing the private sector to claim more expenses (like in the USA) - but in the meantime you are for allways trying to "catch us out" or we must feel "quilty" for claiming expenses ! This is obviously driven by their absolute desperation to receive bonuses.
I recall when Trevor Manual was "in charge", he would want you to understand clearly that he was concerned that private businesses claim "unauthorized" travel. But look at the "bigger picture". How are we already subsidizing the motor vehicle manufacturers ? What are their subsidies ? , Look at their declared profits? What is the fuel tax ? ... and then we citizens must feel guilty when we claim a few kms on our tax return - PLEASE ! Stop coming down on the goose that is funding the governments corruption and wastefull expenditure !!
I'm fed up - and I hope other taxpayers are too. But we are weak - we are too lazy to stand together - even against E_Toll - so what can I expect ?
