Sad, Angry, Disappointed
It’s been a week of terror for the people of Israel with over 200 rockets being fired from Gaza onto civilian targets. As a Jewish woman with young children of my own, I identify with these people and try and feel the pain and fear that they must be feeling. They are my brothers and sisters in crisis and the least I can do is be informed of their struggles and keep them in my thoughts and prayers.
It broke my heart to see a child’s room in ruins, a little baby with blood smeared clothes and I felt the pain of the wonderful people who are sacrificing their lives every day, to live in the holy land of Israel.
And then it struck me, all my sources, and all my information has come from the Israeli media. The South African media prides itself on being ‘unbiased’ and ‘objective’, yet they fail to report on such a gross invasion of people’s lives.
Is it ok for militants to send missiles into a civilian area? Especially timed to hit little children coming home from school? Is that “human rights.” How can this terror simply be ignored by the international media ?I understand that there are different interpretations of the Arab/Israeli conflict, but there is only one way of understanding rockets being continually aimed at civilians with the intention to kill. But maybe the medias acknowledgment of this would destroy the Palestinians image of being the “under dogs” and doubt the assumption that the Israelis are the “big bad bullies”.
So what do the media do? They always report the retaliation of Israel, as if it’s cruel and unusual to defend yourself. I feel that the South African media and the media in general are insulting their own intelligence, by believing so vehemently in the ‘apartheid’ state, that they fail to see reason or fact, that they can’t see the problem with a purposeful civilian attack. The bias is clearly in favour of the Palestinians, who have been successful in one thing, the war of propaganda.
Israel, the small Israel, reminds me of the indomitable gauls, of Asterix and obelix fame. They have a little magic potion of their own. They will win; there is no doubt about that. And I’ve realized that the world will believe what they want to believe, no matter how many angry tweets I post on twitter.
So, Palestinian terrorists of Gaza, you can keep your image and the favour of the media; we will keep the victory and our land.
