The devil is playing his final struggle and his main purpose is to drag men into his side. Thus many false theories and ideas have he introduced into the world to deceive and ensnare. Modern Spiritualism indeed is one of his crowning deceptions that has infiltrated both the religious world, including Christendom, and the world at large. Modern Spiritualism was championed by a group of sisters known as the Fox Sisters who were born in the 1800s. From their time onwards spiritualism has impressed the minds of many with its form.
Spiritualism is the "belief that spirits of the dead residing in the spirit world have both the ability and the inclination to communicate with the living." -taken from wikipedia- But is this idea in line with the scriptures? The devil being clever, in Christendom he twist the truth to propagate his errors regarding the state of the dead. The idea that the dead immediately go to heaven or hell when they die has no foundation in the Bible, that idea is just spiritualism in another form, the snare of Satan. If one say the Spirit of the deceased one continue to live in heaven, saying that we have immortal souls, is basically believing error. And error my friends, must be confronted. For no man is or has immortal soul, for there is only One who is Immortal: "Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
Who only hath immortality..."- 1 Timothy 6:15,16. Only God possess immortality, no one else. But when we say we have immortal souls which go to heaven after we die we are just believing the lie of Satan.
The question may be asked, "But what is a soul?" there are two main definitions of what soul is in the Bible. One is primary and the other is secondary based on the context of what is written.
(a) The Primary reason for the Word "soul"
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." "The soul that sins shall die."- Gen. 2:7 and Ezekiel 18:20. A person according to the scripture verses above shows is a soul. You are a soul, a living soul. Notice the verse does not say "and man received a living soul" but it says, "and man became a living soul" The word of truth says, "His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish."- Psalm 146:4. Immediately when one dies his memory is no longer functioning. You cannot remember anything whatsoever. You not in any sphere of existence. For "the dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence."- Psalm 115:17. No dead person in heaven, dead people do not praise the Lord, for they are dead. So let us not be deceived into thinking that dead loved ones or some who has died are in heaven with God. For man is mortal, and men when he dies he no longer exist till the resurrection.
"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten...Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun(earth)."- Ecclesiastes 9:5,6.
(2) The secondary meaning of the Word "soul"
"Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul."- Job 7:11. Here what is used is called Hebrew Parallelism, meaning that one-thing is explained in different ways. The soul here refer to the Spirit. Two different words with one meaning. And what is the Spirit?- "All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils."- Job 27:3. Another Hebrew Parallelism which shows the breath of life (compare this verse with Gen. 2:7) is also called the spirit which in turn we noticed it can be called soul, in this they are interchangeable. Always got to take it with the context.
And when one dies this happens to the spirit: "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."- Ecc 12:7. And when the spirit goes to God the verse does not say "and the spirit returned to God who gave it and continued to live." No! The spirit cannot live outside the body. Can the spirit be destroyed? Yes- " And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul (spirit): but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."- Matthew 10:28.
So why this immortality of the soul doctrine so popular among Christians? It all goes back to the garden of eden. Satan told Eve, through a serpent as his medium, a lie that "Ye shall not surely die." From hence forth the devil has brought many ideas through the centuries which contradict Scripture. So if we were to say we go to heaven when we die we are actually saying we don't die because death is ceasing from existing, so we will be saying we immortal, and knowing from the Word that only God is immortal, we will be saying we are God. See? The very lie Satan told eve that they shall be gods. Fortunately scripture reveal that when one is dead, it means he is DEAD.
