Scared, ignorant, stupid or uneducated?

20 March 2013, 13:00

From the moment I left the lovely stress free world of school & studying and started working I made a point of reading the news daily, first started by reading the newspaper every morning and when mobile devices and social media became as simple to use as it is today I've switched over to them instead.

I currently work in the finance industry so my column writing skills will not be the best, apologies for this in advance. Now to get to the topic, through all this reading over the years there has always been some constant topics, corruption, murder, rape, fraud to name but a few... The one question I've always been asking myself is, how can the people supporting our current ruling party not read this and grasp what is going on?

Is this because they are scared that voting another party into power will bring back the dark old days? Are they ignorant and do they actually believe that the current ruling party with the same old culprits will start becoming moral and have the interest of the country and its people at heart. Or are they basically uneducated and not able to grasp the workings of economics and that exactly the implications are of the day to day topics popping up every single day?

I would like to believe it is the last, that majority of the people in South Africa either can't read or can't understand the implication of these acts every day. If this is the case, why are we not doing our best to inform or explain this to the uneducated people of our country? I also mentioned scared in the topic, specifically included this because I've heard stories about official harassing voters to vote for a certain party, intimidating them and informing them about the consequences of not voting for them. Hopefully this is not the case. So why do millions of people still vote ANC?

I personally believe the key in solving this countries problems is education, doing our best to educate and to upgrade the level of expertise of every individual to enable them to lift their current living conditions, but sadly this is only possible if a ruling party with the concerns of our countries people being their top priority and not personal gain.

I have been lucky to travel to a few countries around the world, all with beautiful buildings and relics, but they still can't compare to the landscape and possibilities our lovely country has. I can only hope the eyes of our citizens will open up and a ruling party (no matter what color or race) is elected the with capacity to save what we have left. Maybe one day I will start reading some more interesting topics rather than reading of death, corruption and fraud every single day.

Is there hope left..?
