School Uniforms and their economic impact

09 January 2013, 14:15
So lets say we start phasing out compulsory school uniforms, what would the implications be?

I see it as follows:  All children own more "civvies" than school uniforms, so there would be no real cost implication for parents to enable the change.

Now most schools run a "clothes bank" or similar vessel to help less advantaged kids, and this can easily be supplemented by means of clothes donations by the community.

On the issue of standards: the same rules would apply to street clothes as is currently enforced with uniforms regarding dress/shorts length, exposed skin, etc.

But would this not free up a huge chunk of income for the parents that can conceivably be directed towards arrears school fees that is already a problem in a large number of schools?

Is this not perhaps a viable alternative allowing more funds to be directed towards education instead of school uniforms when kids already have "civvies" to wear at no extra cost?
