The four great religions of the world: Christianity, Islam, Buddism and Athiesm.
Note, any Athiest that denies being religious does not truly understand the concept of divinity or is unaware of what exactly his god is. Contrary to pouplar belief it is not true that Athiesm is the belief in no divinity, it is in fact the belief that man is devine... or soon enough will be depending on who you talk to. Most believe that this devinity will happen after millions and millions of years... I have yet to see any direct proof that either we or the planet will even still be here after 1 million years but nevermind that. Others believe that it will occur suddenly in an evolutionary leap, this belief of course inspired the X-Men movies... not the other way around.
The best example of those who believe that man is already pretty much devine is of course the Communists. At the height of communist power Stalin was basically revered as a god in all but name and those serving under him less so but still pretty holy... they just never actually came out and said it because that would undermine the myth that Communists think everyone is equal. Proof that Communists are both sane and insane at the same time if nothing else. Only people in the world that can actually lie pretty darn well with the truth, it's like breathing to those folks.
Buddism, as is well known, believes that all living things are devine but to diffrent degrees. In a endless cycle of life and death the universe ballences itself out by letting the positive rise and the negative fall. So in a way there is no real evil in the world, good and bad has no real lasting effect, everything just is. The more you understand these truths the better life will be for you and those around you. A curious mixture of Athiesm and Hinduism as I see it, to be respected for it's ingenuity if nothing else. Of course like athiesm hindusim is in no two places the same, Japan for example married it with spirit worship creating a kind of shamanism where both religions are true.
Intersitingly, all four religions at various times in history inspired great scientific advancement. This is mostly the case because they tended to spawn centers of learning and scholarly training. With humans being what we are in such situations ideas and inspirations tend to feed each other feuling explosions of critical and imaginative thinking. Of course though this is something that rarely happens if you try to force it as most recent think-tanks have learned, it has to happen organically. Africa's great Islamic acadamies being the best local example of this. Of course these places of learning can only survive if the enviroment is not oppressive or tense, the more the state or religion itself tries to directly control these institutions the more the chance that the science itself becomes perverted... Something those honest enough to admit have seen happen here too, both before and after black rule just in different ways.
Yes we created some of the worlds most ingenious weaponry but is canabalising farming equipment meant to create to make tools of destruction truely something to be proud of? And now those in power have for decades sought to rewrite history, inserting rediculous fnatasies as they went. I'm not saying africa never had great empires, the problem is basically all of them existed above the equater. The foot of Africa, if you can call it that, only had wilderness and the various groups of people today reffered to as the Bushmen. They never stayed in any one place long enough to have any real claim to anything though and neither did they want such things. Then came the great Bantu migration south at about the same time as the Dutch landed at cape town and started moving north. Contrary to popular belief the original occupants were not black, the blacks and whites settled the area at basically the same time. There was no great theft of land and killing without provacation by the whites, if you count the Bushman this did happen yes but it was the blacks that did it.
Christianity's advancements can roughly be devided between the monastaries and and protastant universities I believe, in no way am I sure of this though. The Catholic's of course had the habit of inventing blinkers to where whether there was any already or not and the Protastants were mostly too focussed on not being Catholic most of the time so yes this was mostly lead to to chaotic periods of advancement. I believe the Orthodox mostly just busied themselves with archival work but in no way am I sure of this, they pretty much mastered it at one point i believe. And no it was not a chistian belief that the earth revolves around the sun, all lies, the idea got force behind it in greece and probably because of that the Catholic church assimilated it in their grab for power in the area. Catholic does not equal Christian... it just equals Catholic.
I did not include Judeism because they pretty much only focussed on their particular religion and how indirectly holy Jews are, probably one of the big reasons people were trying to kill them all the time. Seriously now, if someone looks you in the eye and keeps insisting all the time that he is so much better than you... eventually you are going to start getting annoyed. A parallel with local history only to clear to me, the Afrikaners got this idea into their heads that simply because they had en masse promised themselves to God in the Bloodriver conflict they deserved so much better than everyone else... unfortunately they forgot that God never fails to punish such pride and arrogance.
Now with that all out of the way, my point is this:
Science might be the religion of the Athiest but Atiestic science is by no means the only to have ever existed and definitely not the only path worth considering. All of Europe at one point believed the earth was the centre of the solar system because some Greek wiseass convinced enough people of it. Now all of the world believes we're all a bunch of monkey's uncles because a bitter Englishman convinced enough people. Hell most days I'm not so sure we even understand gravity correctly. We have for the last 4000 years believed one fallacy after the other and called it scientific fact... guess that just proves we're all a bunch of idiots who will believe anything as long as it's said with enough conviction. So much for anyone being superior to anyone else.
And yes I know I did not get to everything I needed too... ADD is a beeetch.
