We should scrap ALL the public holidays - both the religious AND the secular. And have those 9 or so days added to our annual leave.
This way everyone can choose to take time off to celebrate what they feel is important- as opposed to what some other people think is important.
Of course this should be agreed with the employer (as should be your annual leave)- so it does not wreak havoc with work scheduling etc and leave your colleagues with too much of your work to do.
For the record- I am a religious person. But- I don't think having folk of other persuasion being on leave at the same time as I am celebrating something of religious significance to me adds to the experience. In fact, it is likely to detract from it- seeing they are more likely to do so by having a raucous party/fest (which I would prefer if they saved for another weekend, God bless them!).
There could still be dates for the secular holidays like the Worker's Day and so on, and those who'd like to use a day of leave on attending a march could do so, while those who'd rather take a day off for spoiling their loved one on Valentine's Day, can do so too, while someone like me can use it to celebrate Good Friday for example. And someone who thinks all these days are a load of you-know-what- can go for an extra long skiing holiday.
That would be the only 100% democratic solution.
