An issue that was reported almost a year ago on Mobilitate is still raging on in the small mining town of eMalahleni.
The Naauwpoort sewerage plant is again pumping raw sewerage into the Witbank dam.
According to local resident Kevin Opperman the sewerage flows directly into the dam without being processed at the plant.
Kevin said the machinery was too small to cope with the amount of sewerage and there are no chemicals available to process the sewerage. Recent cable theft also resulted in a power failure and brought the plant to a stand still for days.
Kevin accompanied the town’s mayor, Cllr Salome Sithole, on a site visit to the Naauwpoort plant earlier in the week.
Mayor Sithole now says she has been lied to about the state of the sewerage plant. According to her she was under the impression that the plant was functioning.
The DA in eMalahleni is now circulating a petition calling for the resignation of both mayor and municipal manager because of service delivery failures.
“Emalahleni mayor, members of her executive, and the municipal manager, George Mthimunye, must shoulder the responsibility of raw sewage flowing into the Witbank Dam, and resign with immediate effect,” the DA said in a statement.
“Mayor Sithole’s disastrous admission on radio yesterday that she had been lied to over the state of the Naauwpoort sewage works by municipal officials, clearly shows how out of touch the executive is with the day-today-administration of the municipality.”
