Should we worry about racism?

23 February 2014, 14:13

It is said that the behavior of racists and extremists is mainly invigorated by their distorted thinking, and to force an adult to change this learnt behavior would only be a waste of time. In other words, such people lack capacity to control their irrational thoughts. And such irrational thoughts tend to trigger other irrational thoughts. So if you care enough to follow a thinking pattern of an imprudent racist you will end up thinking along his/her thinking lines. What a waste of energy and time!

Take this recent racist attack for instance, here a young black student, Muzi Gwebu was hit by a car driven by one of those two racist students. It is not even the first time such reports emerge but it seems like every time a similar incident occur, emotions are quick to run high. We forget all issues and focus on this alleged problem.  Not only we ask ourselves if  my white co-worker may be a racist too, but we even go further to look for reasons to justify our suspicions.

Personally , I don’t think we should worry much about racism, yes, we can worry about crime, corruption and unemployment etc. but racism doesn’t warrant attention and fuss we give to it. It is what I believe it is, a learnt behavior. And stooping low to a point of mimicking the same destructive labelling behavior  hoping to put racists at their place will only be a waste of time. But that doesn’t mean a wayward behavior similar to that of those two boytjies should go unpunished. They have to be punished for their stupidity and after that, back to real issues. Please.  And we should always remember that, at our worsts we can all be racists. I mean being racist is the easiest thing any fool can do. (Even dogs can be racist! LOL.)

When components of our emotional systems are not working together we are bound to even see racism where there is only misunderstanding of cultures. Before we can even label each other racists, or even use the K word recklessly. Can we take some time and ask ourselves what we are really feeling? Is it hate or just resentment? I ask this questions because I know that most are racists are unaware of their resentment. When ever there’s something they don’t understand about alien culture, they rely on their minds to do mind reading for them. Racists should also stay away from using destructive labelling in a futile attempt to cheer themselves up. Calling someone names will only ruin you emotionally. It is like stabbing yourself when you are drunk only to feel the real pain tomorrow. What foolishness!

But still, I don’t think we should worry about racism, I mean, we have come too far as a country. And there’s no reason to allow two stupid students to set us apart.
