My wife was on her way out to the shop and asked me if I needed anything. “Get some bread, please!” I said.
After she left I texted her and asked her to buy bin liners as well. To which she replied “Ok”. Right? Ok, no problem… so far.
Hours later she gets back from the shop and I ask her for the bread. To which she irritably replies I didn't ask her to buy any bread, I only asked her to buy bin liners. I insist that I did, but that it’s no problem and she should not get upset ‘cause I was only asking, not accusing.
She asks me why I've been so nasty to her lately. My response was “huh?”
I haven’t even noticed that she’d lost weight; I always take the domestic worker’s side when she complains about her shoddy work; the other night we went out and my friends seemed to ignore her, etc. etc.
At this stage of the conversation I was seriously confused, asking her what all those issues had to do with her not buying the bread. I decided to not get dragged into an argument (that she’s sure to win – she always does) that doesn't even have anything to do with the fact that I now can’t make a sandwich.
I tell her that she must not “start with me” (one of those great male argument winners) and ask her where she put the bin liners.
“Oh, I forgot the bin liners”, says my wife.
Aargh!! The mystery lingers on.
