Smoking something or other

08 July 2013, 12:50

      SMOKING:  SOMETHING OR OTHER.

When I was young my father and mother told me:  Son we have something to say.  And what they told me I will never forget until my dying day:  They told me that I must never take up the dirty habit of smoking. They told me to not smoke the something which is Texan or the other which is: Oh hell here I am on dangerous ground and waiting to be convinced.  They said that smoking gives you cancer and people die from cancer.  Then I wondered what cancer is and found out it grows on the lip. Why not just use lipice I opined and was told to “shurrup”  for pity;s sake which I did.

Later, as I grew older I smoked more and more tex and without a filter please sir. So far no cancer, lipice, slaps and hours of debating the pros-et-cons of smoking tobacco or the other. While in the meantime, yes that time was mean when my daddy blew smoke into my kisser to bring home his point. This poor behaviour of an adult helped me to move my smoking habits underground. No! Not into the mines, but away from eyes. Years in and years out I smoked skelm and it was hard for my mammy to detect it. She would often demand to know   “What is that terrible smell, I say! I usually said it was one of the cleaners in the lane smoking something or the other.  One day many years later we went to the sea to camp and while there my mammy sent me on an errant. When I returned she gave me a packet.  Inside the packet was 3 packets of tex smokes and I was high. Then she said: Son we have something to say. And what they told me I will never forget until my dying day. Lately I felt like that all day. They said “son you are an adult and must make your own choices and when things go wrong do not come back to us because you are an adult.”  So I started to look at the empty wine bottle through a cloud of smoke:  I proffered the old man a fresh tex and we both sat back smiling at the sky. So I said. “Dad I have something to say”.  He just grunted “What now son?”. Dad, next time we come here will it be ok if I bring Monica with us:  cos she is a big sport. “Yes son, just be safe.!  GIVEN THE DATE  28TH OCTOBER 1998 i officially threw the habit never to smoke again. Now this boom story?
