I recently heard captivating story yet extremely disturbing tale about an old blind woman voting in a shelter, if you could even call it a dwelling, more aptly described as hole in the ground draped over with some material to keep out the water and mud.
Now this old woman was completely blind and impoverished, she was one of those few special voters the IEC agents went out to help vote. The old lady was asked whom she wanted to vote for. She replied Nelson Mandela, the IEC agent then told her: “but grandma Nelson Mandela is dead”. The old lady firmly replied back at IEC agent again, saying then the party of Nelson Mandela.
Despite the ANC doing very little for this old woman she still has near messianic faith in the party of her liberation. Some might call it ignorance but I found it quite admirable.
That is why I am writing this article, as wake up call for the opposition and other political parties (including the ANC) in this country. I have serious lack of faith in the whole lot of you. Instead of actually trying to help people like this grandmother and many others like her, you all just line up for our votes every few years, when you got it you go sit in parliament and do nothing revolutionary or visionary to help us. It makes me question the very premises of your existence; are you here for our votes or are you here to actually help the people?
Instead of making your agendas and actions people oriented you rather try to do sensationalist things to garner votes from us, instead of giving the people hope – you instil us with a kind of dread which only South African politician manages to bestow on the citizenry of this country. Are most of the politicians in this country so out of touch with the reality of the plight of the masses of this country?
Are you all so corrupt you will sell us out to the highest outlandish bidder (the DA and their Agang merger comes to mind as does the ANC arms deal)? How can we win if we are easily bought? How can we keep winning if we are easily sold?
But what does all that matter if the people are easily lead and quickly distraught over everything yet rapidly turn to the same old for the same answers but the problem remains the same! The people are the answer and the people are the problem! When will the parties start dancing with the people to the tune of the people?! No! Instead they hold themselves above the masses of this country as if they are above their reproach!
It is time for parties to go into the houses of the poorest of the poor and start practically helping and building a support basis with the people. The only way any party will ever be able to challenge the ANC is with a people oriented policy.
By this I don’t mean just on paper [with fancy statistics and wonderful manifestos] but be with that granny in her hole and change something!
