South Africa is dragging Africa backwards. We just don’t want to get involved. We want to please dictators. How did we achieve our democracy? Other nation stood by us through thick and thin even if it was not popular, but we are doing opposite right now. We just don’t care.
Why do we wait until western country come and support military intervention, supporting rebels and then we will be saying western people are interfering in our affairs? Which affairs do we really have in Africa? We can’t count more than 10 true democratic nations out of 54 AU members states in Africa. We had a choice to build a new nation (South Sudan) with a democratic constitution and help them build reasonable infrastructure that we, as South Africans, can Invest in, but no we just care so little.
I think we should be obliged to support any genuine democratic intervention in Africa. We should have taken lead in Libya, Mali and so forth. And I believe we are much more capable of minimizing bloodshed in those entire situations. We should invest more in those countries that run their country well. We should be leading in infrastructure building in Africa otherwise we are letting China to take the pole position in building African infrastructure. If the was something that Maummar Gadafi was doing right was Libya’s investment arm. Our Public Investment Corporation (PIC) should take notes from that. Eskom and the rest should be running to PIC for loans other than World Bank and IMF. I don’t even think we invest enough in Zambia, the country that hosted MK and provided assisted to us during those times.
The same thing we are doing to Zimbabwe with the new constitution that should apply to the rest of Africa. Not that we should impose democracy but millions of Africans are suffering in the hands of dictators and rebels who only benefit them and their friends, and this is taking Africa backwards. I don’t want to talk about AU as I really don’t know what they are doing? Default constitution should be applied and all AU members should build their constitution from it. Two terms for president should be none negotiable. AU should have its own Independent Election Commission that will oversee all the African elections. No rebel takeover otherwise AU should intervene with military other than relying on the west.
