South Africa to send eSports team to Baku

It was on the 1st of May 2014, that the IeSF signed the MOU for hosting 6th e-Sports World Championship with both the Azerbaijan Cyber Sports Federation and Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The 6th e-Sports World Championships shall be played from 12 – 17 November 2014.

Through the MOU, the government of Azerbaijan will be directly involved in hosting World Championship with full support including funding for whole operation.

The MSSA thus looks forward to entering its official South African Team to play in such World Championships.

It will the first time that the MSSA will send a team to Baku, and the MSSA intends to ensure that the South African flag is held in high esteem at such championships.

Thus not surprisingly, the IeSF has now also announced the titles to be played at such championships in order to allow all member federations to adequately prepare.

The tiles to be played at the 6th e-Sports World Championship Baku are:

Male division

Female division

Dota 2

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

Tekken Tag tournament 2



Two to three additional official games can still be added by the host county.

South Africa has enjoyed great success at the previous two World Championships with Gabriella Isaacs finishing in 2nd place in the StarCraft II event (for women) in 2012 and Lyrene Kühn consistently finishing in 'spitting' distance of the medals for the game of Tekken in both 2012 and 2013. Robert 'PandaTank' Botha too established his international reputation at the IeSF World championships, when in 2012, Botha finished fifth overall.

Certainly the female component of the team has never let South Africa down, and South Africa owes much to the female gamers for the team being officially ranked as the tenth best team in the world.

Again MWEB is an official sponsor of the South African Team, and full preparations are under way.

In order to qualify for National Team Trials, a player has to be a South African citizen, have a current South African passport and have qualified through an official MSSA Regional, Provincial and/or National Championships.
