Status of the DA

04 December 2013, 17:51

I will probably vote for the DA in the coming elections. But the only reason will be that they are the official opposition to the corrupt criminals that currently rule us. I have not delved deeply into what they plan for the country. But I know they absolutely stand no chance of unseating the ANC. They probably stand no chance of ever getting close to ruling the country. Only a populist party will achieve that goal.

Why do I say this? The DA (and parties like Agang) target the middle class. Ok, the DA also targets minorities for support. So the DA gets majority support from the black middle class, which forms a small percentage of that population. The black elite will stick to the ANC as it has provided them with the opportunities to enrich themselves, with little effort besides having the correct connections.

The black poor (by far the majority) will cling to parties that have populist policies, those with the big promises they will practically never fulfil.

So in my mind the DA will only be a thorn in the flesh of the ruling party. A watchdog, to try to control their plundering. They'll never progress beyond that point, given the demographics between rich and poor, educated and uneducated, in this country.

The education level of the poor if anything has got worse under the ANC (on purpose I think), and the poor and poorly educated are the one's to cling to the populist parties.

The party likely to become the next official opposition will probably be the EFF or Agang. Agang as it is perceived still a black party, and perhaps a moderate "black" party will appeal to some of the poor majority. If the EFF is aggressive enough in their campaigning, pushing the populist policies, they may well be the ones.

The ANC will still retain power. If the EFF becomes the official opposition, the ANC will simply lean more left in their policies. If Agang (I think they're too subdued to achieve anything) is there, the ANC will be more moderate. The DA currently keeps the ANC in check to an extent, but the ANC is very devious and will use whatever tactics possible to sabotage DA support.

The ANC will never give up power. They won't ever allow another party to overthrow them in an election. This is Africa, African democracy will prevail. The only choice is to try to control their corruption to a degree. And rather a moderate opposition than a destructive opposition like EFF. How refreshing.
