Steve Biko - the 'youth' and the 'icon'

17 June 2014, 07:40
REMEMBERING STEVE BIKO – THE YOUTH AND THE ICONBy Abdirazak Ally Ibrahim

Couple of days ago, I visited my alma mater – no need to mention its name, as it went through hell this year regarding its lavish and corrupt Vice–Chancellor and the Rector, as well as its top management for being corrupt and malignant – and I decided to just walk around the campus, and see how Steve Biko would have observed the so–called “Free borns” of today studying “lavishly” at the Higher Education Institutions across this troubled and daunting country of ours.On my way to the Student Centre, I was embraced by a University Cleaner, Jeni, who used to let me use her office to sleep in after I was being refused the place to reside and “exist” in the university’s residence by its management, even though there were 300 empty rooms available at this newly built residence managed by the corporates – who like the rector and the chancellor, canonize the ECONOMIC APARTHEID systems into the university’s curricula and its selection mandate.Jeni was happy to see me. She quickly invited me to see the new student’s centre interior designing, and of course, I bought her a cool drink – as she was exhausted working from 6 A.M in the morning till 4 P.M, that is, Monday to Saturday, and quite sadly: she earns just R2500 per month while the institutional tyrannies at the top of the apartheid–inspired hierarchy earn more than R2 Million Rands, excluding Bonuses of more than R300 000 and unnecessary expenses executed by these institutional tyrannies – who also work a half of Jeni’s abnormal hours, that is: just 6 to 7 hours on selected, few days. While I was at the student centre, I saw the new “wicked”, Malema–kind of Student (mis)Representative Council (SRC) President – who like Malema believes in using hegemonic/patriarchal masculinities to voice his opinions, while at the same time being quite racist/misogynistic! He was busy discussing with a freelance event manager about the night’s lavish, bash party to welcome the so–called “Free Borns” into the university. The event is said to cost more than R150 000. Yes: R150K just for that single night of total madness, chaos and the (mis)representation of the SRC’s goals. The price for that is said to be even higher because there were three huge tracks filled with beers (all kind) to be consumed in that night – by the “Free Borns”, who some of them had exams and practical the following week. I can only imagine what their parents thought of these youth. I can only being more ashamed by knowing that these youth would be our next leaders. I can now cry when I realize that these are the same type of youth whom our beloved “hero” and “icon” Steve Biko had gone through inhumane sufferings and sacrificed his life for them. I cry. Where is our black consciousness? By “black” I do not mean to be racist, and have “dualistic–minded” individuals crucifying me in their comments for using it. But if you know Steve Biko, then you would know what I am talking about.
