When you are employed, it’s your responsibility to do everything to the best of your ability. I am a firm believer that your work ethics reflects the type of person that you are.
HOWEVER, there are a few instances where I wish people would just settle and not do their job. When my phone rings and private number appears on the screen, I hear that eerie jaws tune playing in my head (you know the one daaa-dum daaa-dum daaa-dum), knowing that I am going to have to say no to some consultant offering an “exclusive deal” to me since I was “exclusively selected” for this “exclusive deal”. What tickles me right in the crack where the sun don’t shine, is when these people ask me about my income. How the hell was I exclusively selected when they have no idea whether I earn R100 an month or R100000?
I also wish I had some sort of superpower to use when they rudely want to know WHY I don’t want to except this obviously wonderful deal. It’s also amazing that they are immune to the word NO, and when you have said no in every conceivable way possible, they still have the audacity to ask whether you can supply them with a friend’s number who might be interested in improving their life with this wonderful offer (since you are too stupid to accept it).
I have even tried the – please I can’t talk now, phone me after 6 – trick, and THEN THEY PHONE. These people are so persistent, and I sometimes wonder just how many people they get to accept their exclusive offers. Do some people actually say yes?
I know you are just doing your job, but what prevents you from calmy saying – thank you for your time – when somebody declines???? Due to the fact that I have gotten into a very, VERY heated argument (and then found myself sounding like a bum, with no front teeth and intoxicated with blou trein, spitting insults) with one of these phone pirates, I have decided to just remain calm in future.
When they phone, I just say that I am unemployed, living with my parents, who are also unemployed and we just own a mattress. You are very quickly released from your phone hostage situation!
