With the Marikana strike spilling over into mines across many industries strike season is definitely here to stay. We have striking workers from the mining industry, the truck driving industry as well as now the South African municipal workers are set to embark on their strike action. All of which is just the start when you take into account the various service delivery protest occurring country wide.
Let me state first that I do not and never will disagree with workers constitutional right to protest. However, the manner in which these protests/ strikes are being undertaken is fundamentally unconstitutional and wrong.
Violence has been the order of the day in every strike that has occurred this year, violence that is only getting more frequently and deadly in its persuasion. As a working individual you have the right to strike if you are being treated unfairly, but you have absolutely no right to impede another from working.
What happened to the days of passive aggression? Ghandi showed us that we do not need to take up arms to fight the injustice of any system, how quickly we have forgotten the teachings of the great man.
