I read an article in the Argus yesterday which is quite shocking.
Only a third (33.4%) of children lives with both their parents.
There are approximately 1.1 million orphaned children living with extended family.
There are 885 000 double orphans in the country
Just under 90 000 children live in 50 000 child-headed households.
11 million children were receiving g the Child Support Grant (valued at R280 a month) in July, and more than half the income flowing into the poorest 40% of households come from social assistance.
60% of SA children are considered to be poor.
Racial disparities persist: two-thirds (67%) of African children live below the poverty line, compared to only 2% of white children.
43% of children live in the former homelands, with limited access to services and economic opportunities.
