I have just had a look at the headlines today – “106 girls raped in three months in district”. Now if that headline is not bad enough, when one reads the actual article, it turns out that the number of reported rapes in that period, in that district, was actually 325, of which 106 were girls under 12. (http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/106-girls-raped-in-3-months-in-district-20131024 )
UMDM health official Ms Dlamini attributed the increasing numbers of HIV teenage girls to “Sugar Daddies”. OH PUH-LEASE! Let us at least be honest! These “men” are not sweet, neither is there anything even remotely “fatherly” about them.
Call it as it is – these “men” are paedophiles. Stop trying to hide behind cutesy terms – call it as it is, and then perhaps people will start taking notice of what you are saying.
And then we have the good Dr Ngcobo, blethering on about “muthi” and “spells”. Seriously? Far be it for me to denigrate anyone’s beliefs, but “spells”? Seriously? Dr Ngcobo, you are the Acting Msunduzi Municipal Manager. You hold a very important position in the Msunduzi Municipality. And you blether on about “spells”? Somehow, this problem of some very sick personages has become a matter of the victims – who are CHILDREN – being “under a spell”.
According to Dr Ngcobo, young girls are not focusing on their studies. They are CHILDREN, Dr Ngcobo. Most children have limited attention spans, and as for their ‘studies”, to which you so optimistically refer, the education system is clearly failing them in the most basic of studies, don’t you think? If our children are not being educated properly, is it any wonder that they are not “focused” on their studies? Again, somehow this problem has almost become the fault of the victims, because the victims were “not focused on their studies”.
So, UMDM and Msunduzi Municipality, what do you plan to do about this abominable state of affairs? Run yet another “campaign” about the dangers of sugar-daddies? I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but your first campaign clearly did not work, or have I missed something?
Here’s a thought for you to consider… how about actually EDUCATING our children? And how about catching these sick paedophiles, put them in jail and throw the key away. Make it a life sentence, a life sentence in the real sense of the word.
Let us look at the real reasons behind this behaviour – forget about muthi and spells. The truth is really quite simple. These sick “men” do what they want, when they want, BECAUSE THEY CAN. And they will continue to destroy young lives until those in authority actually DO SOMETHING to stop them.
