What a good weekend in terms of rugby I had. Friday night went to Mbombela, and witnessed the Pumas beating the Griquas convincingly to gain access to Premier Division Currie Cup next year. There was a good turnout, it was good to see the locals turning out to support their team, capped off with Jimmy singing a Neil Diamond song to us. Marvelous, I wonder if any other coach has sang to the crowd! The Pumas play a great brand of exciting attacking rugby.
Then against my expectations the Sharks easily won the Currie Cup final. They played like men possessed, the big names in the Province team just vanished under the onslaught. (A bit like what they did to us in Durban last year, and the Lions did to us in JoBurg the year before.) Amazing, all I can say.
Here's some interesting stats - since Natal first won the Currie Cup in 1990.
They've been in 16 finals in total, 14 (out of 23) of them since 1990. They have won 6 of these finals, next best is the Bulls with 5 and a draw. Lions and WP have 4 each, Cheetahs 2 and a draw.
Sharks have been in 15 semis out of 17. (I think in some of the years there were no semi's?) Cheetahs also made 15, followed by Lions 13, WP 12, Bulls 11.
So basically, since winning the cup in 1990, the Sharks are the most successful Currie Cup team. Go Sharks! (Unless you play the Pumas of course)
