Are you willing to take a leap of faith for Jesus?
This leap of faith test is open to all Christians.
Christians, do you believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God? If you do then you would have no problem with taking this leap of faith as it does not even require you to make the results public. It is all between you and God.
To give you some background, a christian, Mr. Toby Strong, had the following correspondence on a News24 article with Cosmic Bob.
Please note, before you take the leap of faith, it would be wise to follow the links to Prof. Bart Ehrman as provided on this page. I have copied the original text of the correspondence as is and quoted it. I have also made comments. My comments appears only on this page as I was not party to the original corresondence.
This is what Mr. Toby Strong wrote. It is about his belief in the New Testament
"No the New Testament was not written a hundred years or so after Christ. Where do you get your facts from. The guys who wrote besides Paul walked with Christ. Paul lived in the time of Christ. So there is no century of broken telephone there. "
Cosmic Bob, sorry to dissapoint you, but I might just know a little more than you on the topic. You see, I do not google, but I have thousands upon thousand of pages from the top top Old and New Testament Scholars, well peer reviewed on my shelf."
First, let me introduce Prof Bart Ehrman via his website...
"Bart D. Ehrman is the author of more than twenty books, including four New York Times bestsellers: Misquoting Jesus, God's Problem, Jesus Interrupted and Forged. Ehrman is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and is a leading authority on the New Testament and the history of early Christianity. His work has been featured in Time, the New Yorker, the Washington Post and other print media, and he has appeared on NBC's Dateline, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, CNN, The History Channel, National Geographic, the Discovery Channel, the BBC, major NPR shows, and other top media outlets."
"Ehrman grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, and attended Lawrence High School, where he was on the state champion debate team in 1973. He began studying the Bible and its original languages at the Moody Bible Institute and is a 1978 graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois. He received his PhD and M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, where he studied under Bruce Metzger. He received magna cum laude for both his BA in 1978 and PhD in 1985"
Prof Ehrman differs from Mr Toby Strong and this is a brief summary
According to Prof Ehrman, there are no original manuscripts from the bible and the earliest ones we have are about 100 years after Jesus's death. Furthermore he says that most of the earliest manuscripts we have dates back to 200-300 years after Jesus's death. All of them are copies and none are originals. When comparing 100 of them, there were found to be hundreds of thousands of mistakes. There were non-serious mistakes like word order shifted around, speling mistakes etc. but there were also serious mistakes like major differences between the Gospels of Mathhew, Luke, Mark and John like verses added 100's of years later, or major deletions, etc.
So, Toby, maybe you know something that Prof. Ehrman does not? Maybe you have the original manuscripts that no other biblical scholar has? I believe the world would very much like to see them as Dr. Craig Evans in this debate admits that the world does not have them.
AND SOME FINAL QUESTIONS TO TOBY
Since you do believe that we have manuscripts from people who walked with Christ that are the originals (see above) , can you please tell us where to find them as the rest of the world do not seem to be aware of their existense?
How do you know if the verses you quote to the atheists here on news24 EVER appeared in the original manuscripts? It might be some scribe who changed it 100's of years after the fact. If you say God made him change it then I ask, did God also introduce the 100's of thousands of spelling mistakes and other errors?
LEAP OF FAITH FOR CHRISTIANS
Now for the leap of faith..take any single verse at random from the New Testament and swear on your soul on the Bible that you are 100% sure that it occurs in the original manuscript and if you are wrong, that your soul can be cast in hell. You do not have to tell anybody the result, keep it between you and God.
If you cannot take this leap of faith, then I put it to you that we cannot be sure that ANY VERSE or even ANY WORD from the Bible, is the Word of God, if you cannot be sure of a single verse.
