Tata Mandela ………………
Long walk to freedom, your declaration of your willingness to die for the cause you believe in………. a careful scrutinity of portraits in your honour……….. still leaves me with the burning question-; when was your dream born, your character shaped and your perseverance, hope and submission to a greater plan and purpose for your life deposited into your soul?
I cannot help to wander was it in the classroom (built of mud?) as teacher after teacher shaped your brilliant mind…… or was it borne by the wind that mobilized your limbs as you raced from hill to hill in your place of birth….. or was it born when you overheard the older generation express their pain and suffering …… was it then you instinctively knew or heard His whisper that serving and sacrificing on behalf of His people is your ultimate goal?
As an adult your qualifications could have offered you and yours a comfortable life…….sleek cars, dinner’s with politicians; favour’s from the rich and famous, far removed from the injustices apartheid was dishing out …… dilapidated, full of draft shacks, stinking pit latrines, burdened and suffering, oppressed and lonely souls …………..
But divine love had you under His control …… kept your norms and values in check, protected you against a spirit of compromise and moved you with supernatural strength to challenge all barriers,
endure all forms of insults, deprivation, humiliation, suffering …… so that in the end injustice, oppression, inequality, and exclusion can have over His people absolutely no control………..
Tata, your release from prison set free millions of souls, running, racing like you as a little boy in Quno from hill to hill……….
Unchained souls-free to dream free to live where they want, free to speak, free to choose in marriage free to interact ……. free to pursue their individual and carefully nurtured goals………
If I have to summarize his life- my words are to feeble, only those of another extra ordinary human being will do…….
Can you close your eyes and see Tata’s life, his actions; his soul embodied… these words reflecting his every goal?
Martin Luther King junior once said:
“No man has ever truly lived unless he has moved beyond the narrow confines of his own needs, to that of his neighbor, his community and ultimately to that of mankind”….
Tata, Belated Happy birthday, you are truly one blessed soul……….
