Techno babes!

16 January 2014, 13:23

No, I am not talking about the techno bunnies raving in dark sparkling clubs, sucking on dummies whilst raging on ecstasy, or whatever it is they do these days.

I am talking about our little ones – from babies to toddlers to teens – who are exposed, exposed is a harsh word, let’s just say they have access to the all the different types of technology. They have baby toys which are way out there compared to the ones I had as a kid. Fisher Price has now released a baby chillax chair which used to have music and would just bounce softly except this one has an Ipad holder attachment so baby can play on the Ipad before it is able to sit on its own. That is just one very small example of what children have access to. My kids have a PSP, Ipad, LeapPad Ultra, the Xbox Kinect among many other toys.

I am very fortunate that my children don’t seem very interested in these pads and games, don’t get me wrong, they do enjoy them but they get easily forgotten. I don’t think the Ipad has been used in a week, the leappad ultras were used on the weekend and the Xbox because they had friends around, otherwise it can go months without being used. My kids would rather play in the garden, swim and my daughter loves her horse riding. They are very outdoorsy which is great. A balance is needed, I know many families do not have the facilities at home for the kids to play and go wild, especially in complexes where there are many complaints and restrictions from other tenants.

I just sometimes feel that we are stuck in a technological warfare where kids are concerned. Now days both parents work, so many things are hard to monitor. I want my children to have all the advantages of these Pads and games and many of them are educational so they are not all bad. I just feel like they need to have outside play, but in our society with all the sickos out there kids cannot just hop on their bicycles and go off to visit a friend, or play ball in the street, no more skateboarding, yes I was a little girl but I was a Tomboy. I am not dissing all this technology, I think that it is as wonderful as it is destructive.

Something else which is concerning, with all this technology our children are being stimulated at a much faster pace, hence, their brains are processing information faster, it is not the faster pace which is the problem, it is the educational system and all types of therapist around these days do not seem to take this into consideration when they diagnose these new age children with ADD, ADHD and goodness knows what else. The teachers cannot keep up, so the children are not being stimulated at the correct pace and the kids get bored for the most part. What should be going on is instead of drugging our kids to slow them down they should upgrade themselves to move with the times and learn how to teach and stimulate our kids to the best of their abilities. Life is moving faster, our children are far more advanced than we were at their age. I am not saying that they are more mature but their knowledge is more and they want to know more.

As much as I love to see my kids conquering and learning through technology, especially when my 7 year old casually takes the remote from her very frustrated dad and without any effort bumps him up to the next level like it is the easiest thing ever, I also really love to watch them in their fantasy play, when the imagination is all that is keeping them entertained, their beautiful and magical imagination.

I hope that the system can pick up the pace for our special little people of the future!!
