Teenagers are not good parents

04 November 2011, 12:04
The birth of a baby is usually a happy event (some believe a gift from God) celebrated by the parents and family and the proud mother smothers it with love and affection.

To raise children to adulthood is a wonderful and meaningful experience for most parents and it gives them the incentive to work hard in order to provide for their offspring.

Unfortunately all parents are not fit for parenthood. Irresponsible youngsters often under the influence of alcohol or drugs indulge in unprotected sex without a thought as to what happens if the girls fall pregnant. Often babies are born prematurely or suffer from defects like foetal alcohol syndrome

If the mothers are still at school (and many thousands are) they either leave school (without proper qualifications) to care for their children or return to school and leave them in the care of relatives. Usually a mother or grandmother.

Very often the mother spends part of the government grant she is entitled to on herself or the father claims some as compensation for his contribution.

For the child there is mostly misery and deprivation in store. There is also a good chance that the mother will produce a little brother or sister on purpose for the sake of the grant or just by being careless.

That is why the responsible hardworking tax payers apart from raising their own children must also contribute heavily to the upkeep of myriads of other wee tots.

Minister Trevor Manuel cautions people to spend less because hard times are facing us but there is not a peep from government about unbridled breeding by teenagers.

Majority poverty

Being a majority has its advantages and disadvantages, based on various aspects of demographics the citizenry. As far as services are concerned it will always be the minority who will benefit most from government as their numbers can be serviced with the least of money, amenities in their areas will last longer be kept in working order better because of the low demand for it, while on the other hand in the areas of majority it is the excessive usage of services which causes numerous breakdowns and eventually no services. Read more...
