Truth is a very funny word. It means so much to us, yet when we try and define it we are normally at odds end. Personally I understand this elusive word to be a completely subjective anomaly. All I can hope for is a tendency towards truth. It isn’t either this or that, but merely there. So much of our being is determined by what is deemed truth and what is not. What we figure to be reality is solely based off of what we can understand about the wonderful existence of everything around us. Basically what our tiny monkey-brain is capable of discovering and documenting about the absolute mind twist (for lack of a better word) that is our constant being. A six-and-a-half percent genetic difference between our closest cousin and us, determines everything we have ever experienced, understood and discovered versus being kept inside a Zoo or test lab. Our physical-and-natural being is constantly in a state of deconstruction by the vigorously tested and statistically rated scientific theories. Each theory is an amalgamation of facts, individually explained in detail, by the theory itself. In effect, the definition (or closest thing we can get to) of truth: that which is in accordance with fact or reality – is solely defined by the various fields of Science.
Belief – in all of its forms – is in no-way whatsoever involved in established and accredited scientific theories. It is lacking in that area for very important reasons; reality is unable to be believed into existence and every one of man’s conjured paradigms differ from one another more often than not. This is exactly what the pursuit of knowledge underlines to counter: the need to find a common understanding between all of us on what reality actually constitutes, what it means and what we can do with it. It allows us the beauty of an objective perspective on absolutely everything, ranging from how we breathe to why the sky is blue. Not exclusively for those with money and power, but for anybody and everybody – no matter their race, gender or understanding of the world. Every twenty-four hours of your life, the fruits of Science allow you to do (or not do) nearly everything you decide upon – whether you believe in it or not. In times past and more so in times to come, God (in all its forms) is nothing more than an ever-shrinking pocket of knowledge yet to be discovered.
Religion is a solid, never-changing belief in a certain way of life (what it accredits to be in any case). It is a circle of belief-based-reasoning that determines everything thereafter that a person chooses to involve him or herself with. It becomes a beacon of purpose, not based off of logical thinking or rationality, but one based on belief in what one has been told to be true, to be true. One book holds all of the indisputable answers to questions divinely instructed to be of importance. Anything outside of what is perceived to be holy is then to be of an evil nature and disregarded or ignored. Not one of the texts – regardless their supposed authenticity – helps mankind find any answers to the evolving pursuit of reality, for it isn’t based off of reality but rather off of belief in reality. It is never changing and commanded to be so for the sole reason of preservation. It mostly contradicts what we understand the natural and physical world to be and only subscribes to discovery when it is in accordance with scripture.
So does this mean that life only includes what Science tells us there is? Is it the be all and end all of mankind’s pursuit to understanding? I would personally answer, yes. My reasoning is this: we – amazing as we are – are not equipped with the same tools and instrument that Science enjoys. We cannot naturally see an atom, or in infrared, we cannot withstand high doses of radiation, or an atmosphere other than our own. We simply do not possess the physical abilities needed to see and experience everything – most of it is completely outside of our everyday being but essential to understanding our existence. We are lacking in this regard, crippled further by the disconnect between grasping what is being discovered and what we are capable of identifying with. Each of us is equipped with five senses, that’s it. Science has a collection of the absolute greatest minds our world has ever seen, each having discovered or in the process of discovering ways to surpass our humanly capabilities – all in the name of advancement and understanding.
It sometimes frazzles my brain to try and grasp why it is that people are so inherently vehement on their views of the world. Most of what people believe today is in someway or another distorted from what reality dictates, yet they hang onto it for hope of better things to come. Reality isn’t just one scientist (or a single book) telling us how it is or should be – it is the entire library of what Science encompasses, simultaneously enlightening us to truth. This is absolutely contradictory to a believer’s everyday experience, as nearly every move they make is determined by the technologies and findings of Science, yet they still ascribe to a belief in hope of relief from everyday woes. Why? It is so counter intuitive a child can understand it, yet billions of people are accrediting discovery and progression of mankind to one or other form of deity. My only understanding of this phenomenon is the possibility of their scriptures supposed reality to be so downtrodden and outdated, that belief allows them an escape from their current actuality to one of make-believe. What the religious are missing (intentionally or not) is not that “reality sucks” but rather that their belief in reality is what causes the initial frustration and misunderstanding. It is merely taking a two-thousand-year old yardstick and trying to find a place for it to fit amongst the mountain of contradictory findings.
What I understand truth to be makes me smile each and every day. I find it utterly perplexing and wonderful to know that everything I am – my whole entire being – is simply a product of the cosmos through time scales so large I struggle to fathom it. What came before or what caused it is of absolutely no concern to me at present. The vast expanse of documentation and research into everything else that is founded on fact is more than enough to have me understand and relate to the chaos of being. There is no disconnect in understanding. There is no middleman capable of subjective influence. There is nothing more than the ever-growing shadow of mankind’s search for answers. I smile each day because I am a part of it all, undertaking to understand the new and contributing where possible to make the little difference that I can. It is an active participation into the search of the very essence of existence, delving into what it means to be human (or animal) and where this path of discovery will take us all. I know that as time progresses, so we become smarter and more streamlined – what we seek now will seem futile in the future; we merely have to get there.
The wonderful thing about the leap from belief to understanding is that your personal pillar of reliance – that which is based off of faith – is no longer there. Everything you have ever determined to be real is now nothing more than hearsay. You are left naked and wandering without a light at the end of the tunnel. You are finally free. The process of discovery – that was initially supposed to happen as a child – restarts from scratch. You are born again, into a world of absolute wonder – seen through the eyes of fact, rather than that of an outdated and susceptible book. No personal pillar of belief, means no preconceptions or misunderstandings and leaves no room for misinterpretation. You are left to your own devices and ability to find the answers you seek. You are living in every sense of the word, carrying the sole responsibility and reason for your continuation on your very own shoulders and becoming the only determinant on how that time is eventually spent. The more we understand our individual importance (free of stigma and untruths) within this world, the greater our potential will be. We are nothing more than a life form, eerily the same as all other life on this planet we call home, yet different in our ability to care enough about it to want to help.
Collectively, freethinkers find that any form of religion or ideal that doesn’t contribute towards a tendency of truth, is to be consider humdrum and definitely not in tune with the rest of reality. We are just as atheistic in our views as every other believer, practitioner or mystic – just now we have one less untruth to deal with while everyone else is still interlocked in the madness of fear and confusion. Life becomes a consciousness of being, one of absolute marvel and ability – to fast forward humanity into the future, today. This is my charge in life, selected by me, for me. I understand that I create my own being, in line with that which I can readily aim to understand and use from the corner of reason and Science. By creating my being in accordance with reality, I am actively living a life of fulfillment and opportunity on an everyday scale. I am just a boy within this evolving cosmos, trying to make sense of it all as best as I can. Thank you, Science – for shining an ever burning and expanding light on all that is unknown, giving meaningful answers based off of reality, applicable objectively to absolutely everyone willing to take a look.
