The ANC's doing a great job

13 August 2012, 19:04

Let me categorically state that I'm not an ANC voter, but I do get tired of all the 'ANC is ruining the country' doom and gloom around here.
Typical comments people love to leverage against the ANC is things like potholes, electricity and water failures, long queues at State facilities, BEE and insufficient service delivery. Then you've also got the more colourful complaints about corruption, blue light brigades and Jacob Zuma's many wives.

Despite ALL of these things, when I got up this morning, I could drive to work with relatively few issues, had the electricity and water on at home and at work, actually had a job to drive to despite being a white male, and didn't have any need to visit Home Affairs or renew my driver's licence for the next few years.

Do I care about whether or not some Government minister has his or her fingers in the cookie jar? Sure, I do. Do I think that if they didn't there would be a substantial change in my life? Not at all.

Who here seriously thinks that all the money stolen during tender fraud or arms deal sweetening or inflated parliamentary benefits would make an iota of difference to them? For that matter, considering the billions that the Government deals with, I'm not even sure on a percentage basis just how much of a drop in the ocean any of it would make anyway.

It's not like the Government had to cancel a playpark in the privileged white communities or stop handing out free muffins at bingo night in order to line its own pockets.

What counts for me is that I have everything I need from Government. For that matter, so does everybody I know. Yes, there are potholes, but what is the percentage of them per kilometer of road surface? Yes, there are electricity interruptions, but when last did your area experience one? Yes, there is a problem rolling out RDP houses, but how does that affect *your* exhorbitant housing rental with the electric fencing and shared squash court?

All these people who keep complaining about the ANC, please tell me what *you* personally want or need from the Government which it is not currently providing you with? If you have a job, despite being a white citizen, you cannot complain about BEE by the way.

Let's stop complaining about sporadic inteferences in our lives, and just get on with things. The next time the traffic light's not working, turn the radio up a bit and relax. Be glad that you can afford armed response. And pay for your healthcare with an open heart, being honest enough with yourself to admit that even if the quality of service provided by State hospitals improved drastically you still wouldn't cancel your medical aid.
