The Angry Atheist.
Occasionally you will find the “angry atheist”. He is more than a person who says “there is no god”; he is not content to let the status quo be, as many Christians would like him to. Keep quite Christians will tell him; you are rocking the boat, i believe in Christ as the son of God and it works for me so buzz off. But what Christians tend to conveniently forget is that atheists only exist because of theists and so called ‘angry atheists’ only exist because of Bible punching, hell preaching, fundamentalists, who are so used to having their supernatural beliefs coddled that it automatically sounds "angry" when they hear any criticism.
They hate with a passion atheists like Charles Darwin, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitckens, Daniel Dennett and Sam Harris etc who have exposed there iron age belief system. Many recent atheists are brilliant, witty and highly intelligent; while there Christian opponents from fundamentalism are not. Militant Christian apologists like Ray Comfort, Kent Hovind and even William Lane Craig are completely out of their depth in comparison. Very few people are competent out side their area of speciality. Yet you will find militant believers who think they know more than experts and are even prepared to enter into debates with them. To South Africans who have listened to mad leaders like Mugabe and Malema; Richard Dawkins looks and speaks like a pussy cat and is hardly frightening or scary. But it is what he says that is scary, as the pen is mightier than the sword and their edifice of faith which they thought was built on a rock is exposed as being built on sinking sand and it all comes tumbling down.
So if Christians do not like the message and cannot win the debate on merit they shoot the messenger. It is easier to dismiss the atheist as angry and therefore you dismiss their message than to consider whether ones own supernatural beliefs might be wrong. Basic confirmation bias has assured that most Christians would see atheists as angry no matter how polite they are. Some Christians do not look at the log in their own eye and they are livid, self-righteous and obnoxious when atheists win the numerous discussions carried out on News24. They are blind to their own anger and project it onto atheist’s responses thereby confirming their biases. They feel free to inflict their opinion on all and are appalled when atheists tell them an opinion of their opinion.
They demand respect for their silly ideas in school, government, work place and media but they will not give respect to any other philosophy that opposes there cherished and comforting belief system. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Scientologists, Wicca, even Catholics are of the devil. Only they are right and every one else is going to hell. They imagine that outsiders to their faith should find them as loving, kind, humble and moral as they imagine themselves to be. They assert their self-righteous unsupported opinions, lies, and magical beliefs as though they were facts. They wear their faith on their sleeve and jam it down others peoples' throats and cry persecution when people refuse to coddle to it any more. They encourage their kids to worship liars like creationists Kent Hovind, Ray Comfort etc. and distrust those who would tell them the truth and show them the factual evidence to prove it.
They are shocked to find that there are lot of people who view there faith as wrong and they run like spoilt brats away from discussions that analyse their faith. They are used to handing out the judgement and now they are receiving it. Their lies have been repeated so much that they believe them to be true. They are used to monologues not dialogues. One thing that "angry atheists" have done is they have shined a light on such thinking. The fundies come out of the woodwork in protest and the cycle continues. Long may it continue here on myNews24 and angry Christians please understand that; atheists, like the homosexuals have done, are coming out of the closet by the millions - most of them ex Christians and preachers who know more scripture, doctrine and science than your average Senior Pastor.
People are people, whether they have a Christian or atheist view point. Some are kind, some are not, some are smart and some are dumb. You'll find atheists with hearts of gold, salt of the earth types, and born again 'Christians' that engage in sexual affairs, defraud on tax and covet and accuse their neighbours and vice versa. Bottom line is, forget the labels and look at the person and take each on their merits, because a person is 'known by their fruits', and this makes sense no matter what label you carry. The bible, religion and god has nothing to do with who you really are deep down in your being; your genes, your brain, your upbringing and your education or lack of make you what you are.
