Many of the YEC/ID readers on News24 like to use the term atheist cult or the cult of atheism. I believe they use it, primarily as an insult and secondly as a collective noun. The reply from most of the atheists is the standard response of we can’t be a cult because……. and as long as atheists respond this way, the YEC’s will keep using it as they know it grates you.
I grew up during a time when admitting you were an atheist was akin to being the devil himself, there were no other self-confessed atheist families in my town and my father didn’t have secret meetings with other atheist. In my immediate world we were all alone in our lack of beliefs. Today however, people are shouting their non-belief from the proverbial rooftops. Atheist authors are top of bestseller lists worldwide and atheists hold public debates, lectures and discussions with no fear of reprisals. This is all due to atheists working together towards a common cause and this can even be seen in the comments section of News24.
Worldwide atheists are uniting, we have various atheist alliances in USA, Europe and Australia that are very vocal on all levels and they are actually achieving their goals of keeping religion out of schools and public places (advertising in public forums for example). No-religion is the fastest growing religious status in the world and if people are truly being honest, they will admit that religion is dying a slow death.
But I would like to ask, what is really wrong with the term atheist cult? It’s basically semantics, call yourself an alliance, a group, a club, a gang, a team or a cult who really cares (Yes I do know the definition of the word cult). My point is YEC’s are running scared, they know deep down they are losing the battle and as can be clearly seen on all comment sections, their only weapon is insults. So I implore you take away that weapon and say after me:
I BELONG TO THE CULT OF ATHEISM
