The Beginning

20 June 2014, 12:27

I've always wanted my boys to be active in sport. I was told many years ago, in order to channel boys energy it was important to enroll them into as many sporting activities as possible.

I've always wanted my boys to be active in sport. I was told many years ago, in order to channel boys energy it was important to enroll them into as many sporting activities as possible.

It took me two years to decide which one we'll start with. After consultations with the boys we decided to try soccer first and I enrolled them into a soccer club. They were under 6 and 7 respectively. All kitted out and excited about the possibilities, the boys went to their first match. Can you spell D.I.S.A.S.T.E.R, because that’s an under-statement!

The day was ice cold, the match was far and my younger child Chris was suppose to play even though he never received formal coaching (we joined the week the first match was scheduled). Try to predict how it went, actually you can't. When he could hardly pass or stop the ball properly, everything just went bitter and I am not talking about the weather. My boy's confidence took a plunge! He walked off the field crying copious tears and in my motherly way; I put my arms around my boy and cried with him. Goodness if only it could have been cold enough to freeze my tears in its ducts.

I think everybody around us could handle my child's crying, but "gee whizz" how do you comfort the mother. I wondered while the coach was patting me and my boy on our backs, if he stifled his laughter, rolled his eyes and wondered WTF! I knew it was ridiculous and I think I continued crying because there was absolutely no turning back. I had to follow through. About then thoughts of how I'm going to survive this embarrassment and face these people again ran through my mind and I cried some more.

Truth be told, I was unsure why I started crying in the first place. Admittedly, I expected him to know how to play, to be the star player, to not embarrass me and I was disappointed he wasn't. I expected him to run out on the field and just know how to play, gosh how difficult can passing a ball around be?

As we were standing arm in arm, I don't quite know when it became about me. On that day, my dream of being the cool Sports Mom flew out of the window. This was going to be harder than I thought. Reflecting on it now, I realize it was the wrong thing to do; I was expecting something from my child that was not only unreasonable, but completely unrealistic.  This incident would be the bane of my life, but I resolved that as much as sport is about celebrating success it is about learning from failure. I would be restored as a cool Sports Mom. Next time we were coming back stronger!
