The Bogeyman is Real

20 February 2013, 11:30

I hope that Oscar is guilty of premeditated, cold blooded murder.  I hope that the stories of his aggressive and monstrous behavior are not exaggerated but are signs of a disturbed and psychotic young man .

Because if it’s not true, one of the greatest tragedies of our time will unfold before our eyes and the real motives behind his actions are more spine-chilling than a pre-meditated murder by a deranged killer could ever be.

We know that South Africa is a country gripped by terror. We know that we have one of the highest crime rates in the world. 18 000 murders per year compared to the UK with 600 is almost beyond comprehension.

The citizens of this country are under siege. We go to bed at night praying for our safety and the safety of our loved ones. Behind our high walls and barbed wire, our alarms and double burglar bars, our security patrols and radio networks – IN THE SUBURBS . We pray and we hope that we will see morning.

A year ago, I listened from my bedroom as criminals blatantly broke down my sliding door to gain access to my house. I prayed that they would stop there and not break down the passage door. I prayed that they wouldn’t harm me or my unborn child. I prayed that I would see my family again.

A couple of months later, the curtain rail in the lounge came down in the middle of the night. I prayed that they would spare my son. I bargained with God. I didn’t laugh when I realised what had happened, I cried. The cold terror I felt was not perceived it was real and justified. You see, a few weeks earlier, my neighbour wasn’t so lucky. He was attacked in his bed with an axe and a hammer. Some of us make it through the night in one piece. Some of us don’t.  Our nerves are ragged and we are unravelling.  No one should have to live like this.

Who are these criminals that are not interested in just stealing? Who are these monsters who end their robberies off by torturing and slaughtering their victims, often in the most unimaginable way possible and for no clear reason?

And this is where it gets tricky.

Because it would appear that this is a very special type of crime mostly reserved for a very particular demographic  – whites.

Now, before you all start hopping around like maiden aunts at a boys school picnic, hear me out.

I know that what I have just said will brand me  “a racist”. That goes without saying.

But why? Just stop. Take a deep breath in and think.

What do you really believe to be true about this statement?

We have spent the last 18 years being programmed to say the ‘right’ thing but I think it’s time we started to say the REAL thing. Regardless of how some people may perceive what real is.  We can no longer recognise the truth because we have been lying to ourselves and each other for so long.

I know that crime affects all South Africans but where are the stories about the little black boy being drowned in a scalding hot bath after his mother had been raped and both parents have been murdered in a robbery? (Amaro Viana, 12 years old – Walkerville 2012) Where are the stories of the tiny helpless black baby being wrapped in newspaper and set alight after a break-in or the young black school boy who is strung up and left to die with his stomach sliced open and intestines falling out? (www.censorbugbear.org – warning explicit photos of crimes scenes)

These are just a few real cases in a landslide of thousands of similar cases. Are we going to continue to deny that these types of targeted crimes are happening?

If I am wrong and I have merely not come across these stories then please enlighten me. Show me the stories of black families slaughtered during home robberies. I NEED to know because this truth is unbearable.

I am not undermining the multitude of other violent crimes that grip our country and it's citizens every day. I know there are horrific acts committed against decent black South Africans. Muti killings, child rapes,  murders. However, home robberies that spiral into the most unthinkable torture and slaughter? Why? To what end? And who are always it's victims?

If we, the citizenry, both black and white, do not stand up and demand that the truth be acknowledged, we are lost. These crimes will not stop.  It is no longer good enough to abhor evil,  you have to actively be doing something to stop it. Otherwise you are part of the problem.

Let me warn you.

These criminals are haters. They hate everyone who they perceive to be better or more privileged than them. They will not stop when there are no more whites, they will not stop when all the foreigners are gone, they will move onto who they perceive to be the next easy target. And they will justify their crimes by their perceived entitlement to ownership of South Africa.

So, if you think farm murders and a few dead whites in your suburb are not your problem. You are wrong.  You are safe only because of your position in the queue - but you are in the queue. And I believe we are all very aware of our position in this terrifying queue.

And so this brings me back to Oscar Pistorius.

Because where is it normal for a successful, heroic young man to go to bed so terrified at night that he needs to arm himself with a baseball bat, an automatic rifle and a 9mm pistol? Where in the world would it be possible for a man to mistake his girlfriend in the bathroom for a dangerous intruder in the middle of the night and shoot her?

In South Africa - that’s where.
