The Central Truth in the God / no God Debate

27 May 2014, 09:34

The God / no God debate has come to revolve around whether or not Life can be attributed to Creation or Evolution.

Anyone who wants to inform themselves more about this issue needs to understand what Evolution is and what it means. Even more important is to know what Evolution is not, and what the word does not mean.

In Scientific use, Evolution means only that Living organisms are observed to change over time in response to changes in their environment, There is no doubt that this does occur in nature and this is what Charles Darwin wrote about in his famous book "The Origin of the Species" In short, it is quite true that LIVING organisms do change or evolve over time and there is a lot of credible scientific evidence to that effect.

However, this tells us nothing at all about how these organisms came to be alive in the first place. ie the "Origin of Life" issue (as opposed to merely the Origin of different Species). Unfortunately, there exists very little physical evidence about how life first began.

Hence, Professor Steven Hawking ( the man who proposed Big Bang Theory)) says in his new TV series that its "surprising how much we know about the Origin of the  Universe and how little we know about the Origin of Life"  In one short sentence  he optimistically  promotes BBT beyond its limit and completely rubbishes the position of his colleague from Cambridge Prof Richard Dawkins (the Atheist writer), who would have us all believe that Darwinian Evolution completely explains the Origin of Life.

Lets move on to more Science Fiction, lurking beneath the impressive sounding name of Abiogenesis. Abiogenesis is the Theory that life could have developed spontaneously from substances present in the physical universe.

If you research Abiogenesis ( if only on Google) you will find it consists of a half dozen or more completely unrelated proposals of how Life could have or might have come about spontaneously. You will not find any proposal of how Life DID actually come about.  Nor will you find any convincing physical evidence to support any of these widely varying hypotheses. Nor will you find any laboratory experiments which convincingly reproduces any of the possibilities proposed. You will, after much reading, realize that Abiogenesis is merely a word that describes a very vague possibility.

Despite that, you will hear dishonest people including senior scientists who speak loftily about Abiogenesis as though it were an accepted fact. Worse still, they will try to bamboozle you into believing that Evolution and Abiogenesis are basicly the same thing, thereby inferring that both are supported by credible scientific evidence.

They are not the same thing.

While there is good evidence to support the slow Evolution of living organisms, there is no  evidence to support the idea that living, breathing, procreating organisms came to life spontaneously.

The truth is that no-one knows how life began. We believe that God created life and others believe that science will eventually prove some other Origin for Life.

Since no-one actually knows,  no-one has the right to bumptiously promote their opinion as more likely to be true, because it is "Scientific".

That is the central truth in the God / No God debate
