The Contrarian reaches the top of News24!

09 April 2014, 15:33

With 300k views, I’m tentatively going to say that I am the most read commentator of the MyNews section—as I’ve beaten both Irukanji and ZION in views & comments. Come and celebrate with me.

As much as it must pain some to see this arrogant drunk social commentator and contrarian reach the top of News24’s MyNews section, I believe I’ve done just that—though I’m happy to retract my statement if someone can point out higher stats than the ones I used to benchmark myself.

To date, I have

169 articles / 0 photos

300907 views

9933 comments on my articles (that’s about 900 comments more than CharlesDumbwin has lol!)

And I’ve been posting here since 2012

That puts into second place that frequent antagonist of mine Irukanji, with

226 articles / 267 photos

246976 views

And I’m sure he’s been here longer than I have

And ZION has to accept third place with his

449 articles / 637 photos

234066 views

And he’s been here a lot longer than any of us; I’m sure!

I don’t recall seeing anyone else that had numbers higher than these, so I assume that’s the current podium picture for News24’s MyNews section.

What started out for me as a little distraction in 2012 (to try to keep in touch with my South African origins), somewhere along the line became a regular thing for me—I dare even say a mild form of self-therapy. I can’t say that I’ve impressed many people with my coarse and often offensive style of writing and arguing, but I’d like to think that I’ve introduced them, even if forcibly and unpleasantly, to new ways of thinking and looking at certain things in the world (indeed universe).

Now, of course, I don’t really consider it a major achievement to reach the top of the proverbial heap in anything as informal as this, but I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all those fans and foes who helped me reach, if not the top, then very close to it. It is on the hands of people such as yourselves that I get to float, and I consider that a real privilege!

Along the way, I’ve met some splendid people whom I am very glad to now call friends (you know who you are). I’ve also made some ardent enemies whom I am certain would definitely punch me in the face if I ever appear from a Boeing at Joburg International, haha! But one has to take the positive and the negative if one seeks to be a visible figure on the internet.

Looking back at my articles now littering this section of the site, I only wish I had the free time to have given them the polish at least some of those articles deserve. To say that I write drunk is an honest excuse, but still, an attentive proofread before hastily clicking submit would go a long way towards improving the presentation of this sideline writing hobby of mine, and I will try to do just that in my future publications.

I’d also like to extend a special and warm thanks to the News24 staff who slave away reading through, sorting, and then publishing our articles here on News24, and when I sometimes look at the drunken mess I somehow got published, I feel for the person who had to try to make sense of it. Most of my articles are published mere hours after being submitted, so these folks are really grafting behind the scenes, as there are numerous submissions per day. Some of us now enjoy a greater readership and following than some of the professional columnists on this site, and for that we have the staff and editor(s) at News24 to thank for giving us ‘appies’ front page exposure when we produce a noteworthy piece.

So now that I have this illustrious achievement behind my name, where can I go from here but down? There are some excellent journalists and bloggers posting here lately who can pull in big crowds and plenty of comments (they also polish their work thoroughly before submitting it), so I am certain that my time at or near the top will be short lived. I simply don’t have the time to do this News24 thing as frequently or as seriously as I’d like to, but I’ll hobble along at whatever pace I can to try to stay relevant.

I look forward to crossing swords with some of my adversaries again, and I’ll try to lure you to a forum fight in due time ;). I also hope to convert more of you moral saints into insult-spewing trolls, to take you down a level or two ;)

As much as I give SA and some of its people a hard time, I’ve been able to say things here that absolutely affirm that freedom of speech is alive and well in South Africa. And while we as South African (yes, I still have my South African citizenship to use the pronoun ‘we’) have had to give up much in recent years, at least we still have the right to speak our minds without big brother shuffling us off to jail.

This freedom is something I truly appreciate about South Africa and being South African (hey, why should only Julius Malema have it?). And the fact that I don’t have any death threats in my inbox from South Africans (not one, I assure you) testifies to the fact that we Saffers, actually (despite all their nagging), have thick skins and aren’t a bunch of pu**ies ;)

In the possible but unlikely event that anyone here has in any way been touched or inspired by my writing (or even just my ability to drink), I feel that all this labour has been worth it, and I hope I can repeat the experience for you in the near future.
