So many ideas have been presented regarding the end-time Antichrist power but is it why there is so much confusion? Will the Antichrist come in the future or he came at the past? Will he establish his rule in Jerusalem or was it Nero in the past? Who is God's end-time Israel? Are these ideas truth or a propaganda by the Real Antichrist power to shift focus? Surely something must be wrong. There are two Bible prophecy systems will look at, (1) being Preterism, and the other being (2) Futurism..By understanding these two we will understand the finger-in-the-pie.
Preterism is a prophecy system which propose the idea that Bible prophecy happened in the past. Flavius Josephus, a Jewish historian, born the year 37 AD, believed that the little horn of Daniel 8 was Antiochus Epiphans. In the 2nd century, an enemy of Christianity named Porphyry corresponded with Tertallian to try champion the views of Josephus but only did the champion of the ideas emerge through a Jesuit called Luis de Alcazar who was from Seville in Spain. And from 1569 going forward his mission was to counteract the protestant view of Bible Prophecy. You see the Protestant at the time pointed to the pope as the end-time Antichrist, and Catholicism feeling the heat, the counteract came to full swing. Here are some quotes to see what was believed back then:
“Is the Pope of Rome to be looked upon as The Antichrist, whose coming and reigning was
foretold in the ancient oracles? The oracles of God foretold the rising of an Antichrist in the
Christian church; and in the Pope of Rome, all the characteristics of that Antichrist are so
marvelously answered that if any who read the Scriptures do not see it, there is a marvelous
blindness upon them.”- Fall of Babylon, Cotton Mather, Froom, PFF, volume 3, p. 113.
“I deny that See [the papacy] to be Apostolical, wherein nought is seen but a shocking
apostasy—I deny him to be the Vicar of Christ, who, in furiously persecuting the gospel,
demonstrates by his conduct that he is Antichrist—I deny him to be the successor of Peter, who
is doing his uttermost to demolish every edifice that Peter built—and I deny him to be the head
of the Church, who by his tyranny lacerates and dismembers the Church, after dissevering her
from Christ, her true and only Head.”- John Calvin, Froom, PFF, volume 2, p. 436.
“But as touching the Pope and his Spirituality, I owe them neither suit nor service, for so much
as I know him by the Scriptures to be the great Antichrist, the Son of Perdition, the open
Adversary of God, and the Abomination standing in the holy place.”- John of Oldcastle, Froom, PFF, volume 2, p. 88.
Could these great men and others such as Martin Luther, William Tyndale be in error to refer to popery as the great Antichrist power the Bible is warning us about or what? Remember Preterism carried by a Jesuit by the name Luis de Alcazar was to counteract what the protestants hold in view of catholicism in those times. Alcazar he even wrote a book called "Vestigation Arcani Sensus in Apocalypse" translated in English meaning "An investigation of the Hidden Sense of the Apocalypse" which was published in 1614.
In the book Alcazar shifts the prophecy of Daniel and Revelation to their fulfillment being in the past. He believed the entire book of Revelation was fulfilled in the six centuries of the Christian era and that Nero was the predicted Antichrist. And what was the main purpose? To counteract the Protestant view of Bible Prophecy. Sadly this Preterism method was adopted by Protestants from 1644 by Hugo Grotius of Holland and many followed suit. Wow! now the tables have turned? This method finally was introduced in the USA by Moses Stuart in 1842. Sad that people are championing the course of Catholic teaching, the very one which thought "to change times and laws"- Daniel 7:25. Thinking to change the prophetic calender of the events in the Bible to shift the heat from her.
Basically this idea of prophetic method is the one which is highly in full force in many within modern Protestantism yet its very origins is Catholicism. Surely there might be many sincere Christians who believe this type of prophetic interpretation without knowing that is from the Jesuit Order. Another method which shift the minds of men into wrong directions looking for the appearing of the Antichrist in the future. Oh how sad!
Futurism points the Bible prophecies to the future. A Jesuit scholar named Francisco Ribera was from Spain. He joint the Jesuit Order in th year 1570, being 33 years. This we can safely say he is the father of Futurism. The main criteria of Ribera was...:
(1)...that at some point in the future the Antichrist would be an infidel, who is to reign for a period of 3 literal years...and (2) the idea that the Antichrist would be a single individual...(3) who will rebuild the temple at Jerusalem. Ribera then died at some point and his work was championed by Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621) a Jesuit apologist. And this was done as to yet again remove the heat from Roman Catholicism as the Antichrist power. From Ribera to Bellarmine, unfortunately, this counterfeit method found its way into Protestantism in the 19th century: “But now, in the nineteenth century in Britain, the Futurist concept was again revived, by Samuel
Maitland, James Todd, William Burgh, John Darby of the Plymouth Brethren, and the renowned John
Henry Newman.”-Froom, PFF, volume 3, p. 656.
See how Protestantism is now connected with Roman Catholicism (the very Antichrist power as we will see in future articles) regarding prophecy? You see this futurism method had another turn when another Jesuit priest called Manuel de Lacunza y Diaz in which his eschatology points that (1) the 144,00 will be literal Jews, (2) that Rev. 4-22 is future, and (3) that literal Israel will be re-gathered and converted , and (4) God will fulfill his covenant promises to literal Israel, and also (5) the idea that there will be a millennium of peace on earth were people will live on earth will mortal bodies...But why has many in protestantism has similar ideas with the Roman theories?
It is of great importance that the reader may understand that I believe God has a people in other churches, including Roman Catholicism, but I believe also that Roman Catholicism is the Antichrist beast, the little horn and Babylon the Mother and error must be confronted. Tune with me as you will know why the Bible points us to Roman Catholicism. The ideas of futurism found their way in England and then later to the USA and now many a Protestantism is championing it. What a sad state! You will see why in the future articles the Reformers were right on the spot regarding popery.
“Why is it necessary in unbelief to look for another
Antichrist? In the seventh chapter of Daniel, Antichrist is forcefully described by a horn arising
in the time of the fourth kingdom. . . .wearing out the saints of the most high.”- De Papa, John Wycliffe -Froom, PFF, volume 2, p. 55.
“But it [the little horn] was a kingdom of a different kind from the other ten kingdoms. . . . By its
eyes it was a Seer; and by its mouth speaking great things and changing times and laws, it was a
Prophet as well as a King. And such a Seer, a Prophet and a King, is the Church of Rome. A
Seer. . . .is a Bishop in the literal sense of the word; and this church claims the universal
Bishopric. With his mouth he gives laws to kings and nations as an Oracle; and pretends to
Infallibility, and that his dictates are binding to the whole world; which is to be a Prophet in the
highest degree.”- Sir Isaac Newton, Observations Upon the Prophecies (London: 1831 edition), p. 75.
“It is agreed among all maintainers of the Evangelical Church that the Roman Pontiff is
Antichrist.”-Samuel Lee, The Cutting Off of Antichrist, p. 1.
