The Game has changed

20 April 2014, 17:30

If you are a child from the 60's, 70's or 80's in South Africa you had a different set of rules than the NewFreeBorns.

In those days you had Mev Dominee, Dokter Pietie and Dominee Haas. These where the important people in town but then there was also Mr Lawyer. He was the main konyn, just a step above the Town Clerk.

I often look back at these times and wonder how it came about that Lawyers had all this power. Do they have it, or did we give it to them. Why are they more valued members of society than the Post Office guy or the Telephone man.

One of best thing that could happen in our country was to see how the judicial system works in practice. A man was on the stand for days testifying while he is not an expert but the system allowed this.

Irrespective if he knows what he is talking about or not, the attorney gets paid. We have cases going to court and costing millions because the lawyers says ' you have a case'. At the end the guy did not have a case, lost thousand and the Lawyer is buying his next property.

I appreciate the Judge speaking up about the qualifications but now they have to look at the processes in the Law systems and how and were Lawyers charge and take cases on. This is no longer the 60's, 70's and 80's. The game has changed.

And while we are at it, make them do community service for a year or two. This will help the people who pay tax to subsidize their university studies.
