The God of the Bible

13 June 2014, 09:11
Although God decrees evil, He does not directly perform morally evil deeds. God cannot do moral evil because His will is directed only toward good. However, God allows Satan, demons, and sinful men to do evil deeds. He does not cause them to do anything they don’t already want to do; He merely allows them to carry out their evil intentions. Thus, man is responsible for his sin, not God.As James wrote: “Let no one say when he is tempted, `I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death” (James 1:13-15).
In light of this, Jesus says that it is morally and spiritually impossible for a person to come to Christ apart from the “drawing” of that person by God the Father (John 6:44, John 6:65). I must strongly emphasize the words morally and spiritually. The reason people do not come to Christ is not because they lack a will, or a mind, or feelings, or even lack opportunity or occasion. Their inability to come to Christ is due to their moral and spiritual refusal to do so, a refusal in which they willingly and freely delight. If they cannot come it is not because God will not let them. It is because it is their nature not to want to come.God is much greater than we can possibly imagine. A Deity so powerful that He can allow His creatures to make free choices, yet determine from the foundation of time what those choices will be, leaves us in total awe. This truth should make us want to fall on our knees in total praise and submission to Him. At the same time, this truth should bring tears of thankfulness to our eyes. It is nearly incomprehensible that a God this powerful loved you and me enough not only to choose us from the beginning of time, but also to work all things together for our good. Only an all-powerful God could do this.
To this end, Jesus wants those of us who believe in Him to live an anxiety-free life. He says in Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”“All these things” include what we eat and drink and wear — all the practical needs of this present world (Matthew 6:25). Jesus tells us that we don’t have to worry about them because we have a sovereign Father in heaven who cares for us. Just look at the birds, he explains, and the lilies of the field. Birds have food to eat because God provides for them — “he gives to the beasts their food and to the ravens that cry” (Psalm 147:9). The lilies are dressed more beautifully than even King Solomon because God clothes them. And we, God’s children, are more valuable to him than birds and lilies.
But are God’s children always supplied with enough to stay alive? No. They’re not. The bible clearly speaks about times of leanness in the life of a Christian (persecution and death – Matt 24:29 / Famine and nakedness – Rom 8:35). So then, what does it mean when he says “all these things” will be provided for you? What it simply means is this. God is saying “I will provide you with everything you need. All the food, drink, housing, transportation, education, money, health you need will be yours in order to do My will and to glorify My Name. I will never ask you to glorify Me in any way for which I will not supply you with the means to do it. I will give you everything you need in order for you to live under My kingly rule. Seek My kingdom and My righteousness. Live under My rule and in My righteousness and I will give you everything you need to be successful at that.

Why I love Cambodia’s capital

There are so many reasons to hate Cambodia’s bite sized capital of Phnom Penh. Open sewers, naked children, piles of burning garbage on every street. Its a dirty, smelly, noisy amalgam. But Phnom Penh grows on you and by the time you leave it will occupy a special place in your heart. Read more...
