Amidst a mass of rumours and conspiracy theories hinting that the winner has already been chosen, the contestant contingent has finally been narrowed down to the highly anticipated Top 10.
Although not to everybody’s taste one has to agree that, for the most part, it’s a talented and diverse group of people.
Here is why I think they made the cut:
Nosipho:
Definitely one of my favourite girls this season. She’s super sweet, has a quirky sense of humour AND the girl can drive a tractor! Consistent growth during the competition is a must and Nosipho has gone from strength to strength.
Possible downfall: Limiting herself to ‘diva-type’ songs
Chloe:
Every season of Idols needs a beautiful blonde to keep the male viewers interested (think Carla, Pixie and Adeline). What sets Chloe apart from her predecessors is that she CAN actually sing. She’s not your archetypical pop princess and can possible excel in a number of musical genres, should she remain focussed enough.
Possible downfall: The inability to connect with her audience
Shekhinah:
Whether it be for her voice or her charming back story, thousands have jumped upon the Shekhinah bandwagon. Being a repeat entrant she already had a fairly established fan base which, together with a number of solid performances, secured her a spot in the Top 10.
Possible downfall: Cracking under the pressure
Melissa:
No stranger to talent shows, this High School Musical beauty seems to have the world at her feet. Whether her voice measures up to that of the competition remains to be seen but she has no shortage of fans who I’m sure will do everything they can to keep her in the competition.
Possible downfall: Focussing too much on performing and slipping up on vocals
Tshidi:
Who can forget her emotional exit from the competition last year? I’m glad she was sent home at that stage because she came back with a bang. The new and improved Tshidi oozes confidence, looks like a million bucks and sounds even better. Her fan base is growing in leaps and bounds and I can’t see her exiting the competition until at least the Top 5.
Possible downfall: She too must not limit herself to ‘diva type’ songs
Simphiwe:
I fell in love with Simphiwe during his first audition. He’s confident without being arrogant, immensely charming and can sing the hind legs off a blind dog. Seen by many as the one to beat, this young man has found himself a huge following and is fast becoming one of the competition favourites.
Possible downfall: Bad song choices
Dominic:
Watching Dominic perform makes me feel strangely invigorated. He is a breath of fresh air in an often clichéd competition. Having seen countless WGWG’s come and go makes me appreciate his inimitable and effortless style all the more. With a large and diverse fan base, Dominic will keep raking in the votes as long as he delivers solid performances.
Possible downfall: Becoming too frantic and losing focus on stage
Khaya:
Dubbed by many as ‘the chosen’ one he is without a doubt a strong contender for the title. Boasting one of the largest fan bases in SA Idols history he is sure to have a relatively long run in the competition. Whether he will continue to live up to the hype surrounding him so early in the competition is anyone’s guess but I have a feeling he will be around for a very long time,
Possible downfall: Predictable, one dimensional performances
Monde:
With this being his last chance to enter, Monde made sure he gave it his all from the get go and he hasn’t disappointed. His pleasant demeanour has endeared him to many a fan and he seems to exude a charm that especially the ladies find irresistible.
Possible downfall: Allowing his nerves to get the better of him
Obakeng:
Yet another contestant with an established and flourishing fan base. I do not remember him at all from the Sun City rounds but he has clearly impressed the right people to make it to the Top 10. He has a cool ‘swag’ about him and the fact that he is a backup singer for Zahara doesn’t hurt his chances to progress well into the competition either.
Possible downfall: Delivering stagnate performances
Love them or hate them, these are the contestants in the running to become the next South African Idol. Support, uplift, criticize or condemn but whatever you do make sure you make your vote count!
