The Irrational Nature of Sports

25 December 2013, 08:26

So, After the Test Match against India, We drew the match. After three and a half days
of Cricket, I concede that India played superior Cricket. There were moments of Brilliance
from South Africa, But they did not hit the mark enough.

But, I will get back to that. This concerns a typical South African Cricket fan and the
institution built around the game. Firstly, The commentary of the match up until day
four was so biased against South Africa, I found myself getting incredibly annoyed. I
generally feel we have some great commentators, But, This game really got under my skin
from the awful commentary and general lack of confidence in South Africa.

I have long been a fan of the purist form of the game, Test Cricket. Not to say I don't
enjoy one day Cricket . I just don't like getting emotionally invested in the shorter
format, No explanation needed.

Back to the match that just finished in a somewhat controversial manner.South Africa
did not go for the win in the end. Just to be clear, I stand behind the Proteas and I
accept what ultimately happened. I was a little disappointing, But I was also proud that
we managed a draw.

Obviously, There are varying opinions on the result. In fact, Most think we should have gone
for the win. That does not bother me. We all have the right to our own view or opinion. But
what does bother me, It's the amount of hatred being spewed at the Cricket team at the moment.
Just reading forums and comments on articles about the match and the series, People are
calling the Test Team Chokers.

Graham Smith, A man who has taken us to the pinnacle of the game and is the Most successful
Captain since re-admission is being compared to corrupt politicians. There are accusations
of match-fixing flying about. I have never been so disgusted by some of the things being
said by my fellow Cricket fans.

There is a great many people who have pure hate in their hearts. Why ? Well, I ask this
one Question, Why do so many Cricket fans Hate Graham Smith ? What has this man done to
deserve the irrational amount of criticism he gets ? Yes, He is the Captain of the Test Side
so some it ultimately falls on his shoulders, But I don't understand the blind hate for
the man.

I look at some of his Achievements as Captain of South Africa in recent times and I shudder
to think how far he has brought Test Cricket in our Country. We have always been a competitive
team, But under this current leadership, We have done extremely well by beating everyone
and becoming number one. The biggest feat was beating Australia both in their home and
in South Africa in Tests Series competitions.

I think the problem is, South Africa is so self absorbed as a Country, the feeling of
entitlement is reprehensible. We are bound to play badly and make bad calls, We are only
human. The test match side is no different. Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander are leaders
in sports, The booing of these two fantastic players is unfathomable.

I admit, We probably could have won that Test Match, We made a mistake. Just remember,
We are not the chosen ones, We are equal to everyone else in the world and we should be
humble that we are in the position we are in as a successful Sporting Nation. We have won
two Rugby World cups, Yet we are considered to be number Two in Rugby. That is the perception
of the rest of the Rugby world.

This feeling of self entitlement needs to change, We have to pay our dues and earn the respect
of the rest of the World. We let ourselves down when we resort to the kind of vile Rhetoric
that I have read about what The Test Side did. Maybe this is not one of the great Test teams
that are on par with The West Indies of the Past or the Aussies under Steve Waugh and Ricky
Ponting. If that is the case, I accept it. The points is, It is out of my hands and it is
out of my fellow Cricket lovers hands. We drew and we can still Win. we just made the wrong
call with three overs two go with mitigating circumstances. To think, We saved a Test match on
that Wicket. Still a feat to be respected.

Merry Christmas South Africa.
