The Irrelevance of the Church

23 July 2013, 09:30
I come from a country where Pastors rank in Forbes richest list, yet they know not the names of their neighbours. Pastors are worshipped where I come from with names like, Baba, Daddy, Father, Apostle, Bishop, Sir...etc. Congregants bow down their heads in adoration and many times greet their local pastors with soooo much reverence and esteem it borders on idolatry. Pastors and Churches own schools where their own congregants cannot even attend because tuition fees are too expensive.

How relevant is the church of today? How relevant is your local church. Church these days have become a gathering of worshippers only and thats where church ends. I look at the evils that have plagued society today and wonder what solution the church provides. Some examples:

- Do poor people out there think about the church as a point of satisfaction when they get hungry. No I'm not talking about Salvation Army or a local charity organisation, I am talking about the hall where you come together on Sundays and cry "Abba Father" that auditorium also used to feed the needy in the community, or do you chase away them beggars when they come around? The church needs to apologize.

- When young people have relationship and family issues, sex issues, underage pregnancy, drug addiction and other social issues, do they think of the church as a point of solution? What about families where domestic abuse is rife? Do they feel comfortable to go to a church and seek help? Or are they ashamed and feel fear that they will be judged. Have church people become finger pointers? What about Gay/Lesbians, is there a place in church for them? Or do we immediately purge out the young lady who becomes pregnant and call her a sinner? The church needs to apologize.

- Do students in matric and those in varsity studying accounting wish to one day serve in a church? Do entrepreneurs with few hours to spare during the week think of the church as a place where they can volunteer their time, skills and talents? Are churches a safe place to volunteer without being judged for who/what you are? The church needs to apologize.

- Do government officials (when looking for solutions to social development and youth issues) consult the church? How relevant is the church? The church needs to apologize.

The doors of many churches are closed all week and only open when there is a special event for members. Many churches do not cater to the random guy, passing by and needing help. They refer them to charitable organisations and care homes.

If indeed it was because of love God sent Jesus, then the church of today is NOTHING like that.
