The Kenny Kunene Boast (not roast)

30 April 2014, 10:43
Watching the roast last night on Comedy Central the first joke was of course Jimmy Carr's surname. I mean, he is English but they couldn't spell Car correctly. I smell Bollywood. He looked like a Chetty to me. His first joke was unsurprisingly about Zimbabwe. Problem number one (as I noticed) his first official joke was about Oscar Pistorius: what's new! The crowd was apprehensive at first, understandably so since no such joke had been cracked live and on national television.Problem number two was lack of focus from Carr and his fellow roasters. They seemed to forget so fast that we were roasting Kenny Kunene - not themselves. To be perfectly honest Kunene felt much extolled last night than dressed down. If this bunch of unprofessional comedians wanted an excuse for a show did they really have to hide behind Kunene? Also - problem number three - the 'kill -your-girlfriend-in-the-toilet' joke is now tired! Almost everyone has repeated it.It was obvious why Trevor Noah is having a proper monopoly in S.A. He has original jokes. The panel last night had what I like to call Sailor jokes. Theses are jokes that have been heard over and over and over again told differently. Even Vlismas who I expected better from forgot about roasting the notorious playboy. And when the definition of Vlismas was finally revealed it all made sense why he should be among comedy's endangered species.Who in their right senses invites Dineo Ranaka to act as a comedian? The only statement that came from her was her fashion statement.I missed Trevor Noah last night. Isn't it baffling that we have one the best comedians in the world (arguably) but we'd rather have the talentless Somizi and that other radio host that came out of the closet too late, the rapper with the skateboard ramp cap, the warped version of Kanye's baby mama and the other  inconspicuous ones (except for size: Tumi). What a waste.Kenny Kunene had the night of his life last night. He escaped a roast unscathed. Not so if Noah had been summoned. Not so at all.Problem number four was how everyone South African in the crowd looking seemingly insulted by anti-South African jokes dished out by Jimmy Carr. It's a comedy show, dweebs.  The radio host, he of coming out of the closet in his fourth decade, showed the most signs of unease when Carr laid a brick on his language, Afrikaans. In turn he decided to insult Carr in Afrikaans. Who does a stupid thing as that. If you insult me in a language I don't speak aren't you just screaming a the walls? I really wonder what this man's listeners listen to when he's on air. All in all, for the record, may I say it was a well arranged function. I just pray that next time the organizers call real comedians for the panel and, more importantly, leave the roasting of Oscar to Gerrie Nel.
