The Keyboard Racist

Gone are the days where people kept their racist remarks in their thoughts or shared it only amongst close, like minded, friends. In this day and age all you need is an internet connection, a fake account and you can tell someone exactly what you think of them and their race without being subjected to public scrutiny or even the law.


Click on any online news article and tell me you do not see a racist remark left by someone with a fake account. Odds are 99% of the time you will find more than one. The shocking part is that all these people do not even care what the article is about. If Sipho or John leaves a valid thought provoking comment chances are the Keyboard Racist simply look at the name and attack, irrespective of whether Sipho or John’s comment are actually correct. You also get the fence sitters who will like someone’s comment if they agree with something that was said against their own race. In this case all the racists will embrace you as being “clever”.


The point I am trying to make is that racists have it so much easier these days, they can insult you and call you names without fear of reprimand. It also shows the mentality of your average South African. You can log onto ANY online news website and you will find the most disgusting attacks from people from various races, cultures and creeds.


South African racists have become cowards. The days of calling someone a “baboon” or “umlungu” in a pub or taxi are long gone and are now only reserved for people who want to keep their racism a secret. These are the same people that you will find at a yearend function shaking Sipho’s hand and trying to be cool by speaking a word or two in Xhosa and vice versa.  They want to seem “cool" and “hip” but once at home and they see the latest government failure they immediately run to the keyboard and lash out.


So, how do we deal with this? How do we control it? The correct answer is we simply can’t control or deal with it. Your Keyboard Racist will always find a way to beat the system. Their hate and bitterness knows no boundaries and they will go to the ends of the earth to show you how their race is so much better than yours.


The only thing we can do is stand united against comments like these and report it to the web admin. The removal of these comments along with the user will eventually get rid of “some” of them. One important thing to note is that you shouldn’t get suckered into a debate with them. By doing this you allow yourself to be beaten by someone who has a lot more experience than you in playing dirty.



They are sad human beings that are stuck in the past and your counseling or advice won’t change their minds. The most important thing you can do in this situation is realize that the person making the racist remarks DO NOT SPEAK on behalf of his race.
