Maybe I should leave well enough alone, because this might just upset both sides, but...
I have said that I do not want to get drawn into arguments on the proof/non-proof on the existence of God, but having read the comments, I feel that I need to clarify some things which might have been misunderstood. First of all when I said that I am not well versed with all the scientific theories being quoted, all I meant to say was that I am not even going to pretend to be an expert by quoting entries on Wikipedia, which I might point out is not a very reliable source, as you never know where the author got his/her facts from.
Let’s face it the only people who can reliably claim to be experts on evolution is someone who has spent their lives researching it. The same applies to biology, math and all other fields of science. If you just go around quoting these people, that does not mean that you have actually thought about it, you are just repeating other people’s ideas. I personally don’t think I am ignorant, I just never studied science after Matric, and therefore I don’t want to claim to be an expert.
I would also like to point out that I called myself a Christian, and said that I have an absolute belief in the existence of God. This does not mean that I am a slave to any religion. Personally I don’t think that you have to be part of a religious group to be a Christian. The aim of the original article was to represent the (I think) majority of people out there who are not fanatical, on either side of the debates, and would like to see some tolerance out there.
I had no intention of forcing anybody to believe as I do, I merely wanted to state what I believe to let them know that not everybody who believes in God is a religious fanatic. I did warn you in the first paragraph you might not like what I have to say, so if you spent minutes reading and hours commenting, you only have yourself to blame…
Many comments are about the various religious groups who have views on anything from abortion to what you may read or watch. I also have a major problem with this, because I believe that it is nobody’s right to judge anybody else. God is the only one who I believe has the right to judge me. I understand what people are saying about some of the oppressive religious groups which are out there, and I understand their frustration, but I think it is very unfair to judge all Christians on the actions of a few.
If you are robbed by a Swedish model, that does not mean all Swedish models are bad, does it? Until 2005 I was part of one of the major Afrikaans churches in South Africa. When my father passed away, and the pastor started the service without us being in the church because he was in a hurry to go on holiday, my eyes were opened and I realised exactly what the congregation meant to him.
This completely destroyed my faith in the (let’s face it) man-made church, but I kept my faith in God. The people who lead some of the churches are in it for the money, plain and simple.
As I said, I really don’t care what you believe because at the end of the day it simply does not matter to me, and has no influence on how I lead my life. I am FAR from perfect, but I do try to treat everybody I meet with respect.
I am sometimes judgemental, because I am only human after all, but let’s face it being judgemental is not the sole providence of Christians, is it? I saw one comment from someone who said that they didn’t read my article, but I looked drunk in the picture. This picture was taken at a New Year’s party at 01:00 in the morning, I was really enjoying myself, so sue me!
