So what do most parents pack for their 3yr olds? My daughter attends play school 2 mornings a week and so far I’ve been very good at only packing healthy, nutritious meals in her lunch box. This usually comprises a low GI cheese sandwich (and she loves that I carve shapes with these) and sliced fruit. Sometimes I’ll substitute a yoghurt or some sliced vienna sausages. A controversial nutritional question is if always including bread in her box is not already breeding unhealthy, carbohydrate rich eating habits but that will be a discussion for another day.
Last week she asked me to please pack her a pack of crisps because her best friend at school often brings and then shares them with her. I have no issue with her indulging in treats at school – she is a very healthy eater in general. I, however, do not want to indulge in her the expectation that I will include these in her box on a regular basis. She has a long school career ahead of her and I feel lunch boxes should be healthy. I get though that she also wants to occasionally contribute something to the table (so to speak) and be able to share with her friends. It is, of course, of no help that some of her friends bring treats and sweets all the time!
Needless to say, I included a pack of crisps today. She was very happy but has already put in her order for what kind of crisps she would like next!
So what is the consensus? Some schools lay down the law forbidding treats except on Fridays. I quite like the idea...any thoughts?
