Speech, the ability to put emotions into words and to vocalise one’s inner sentiments, thereby giving it clearer expression is an important faculty of the human being. One need only to dwell on a word bereft of speech to realise the role it plays in our lives.
Yet, we often use words carelessly and with malicious intent. Gossip, insidiously spread, has tainted many a reputation. Bitter acrimonious words can hurt more often than a physical blow.
Words have the power to move the masses to tears exhorting them towards great sacrifice, as in a war or in a communally charged atmosphere.
A child’s first spoken word is awaited with much excitement for it ushers her into a civilised world where much of the communication takes place through words.
It is a pity that while teaching her proper nuances and correct pronunciation of language, one neglects to imbibe in her the sensitivity towards words and the caution to use them carefully.
Since words can bring as much joy as they can cause unfathomable sorrow and pain, among a child’s first introduction to words should be a realisation of their potency.
