The Rules of Engagement.

19 April 2013, 09:00

Two Combatants face each other in the ring, each sizing up his opponent, looking for weak spots, trying to demoralize the other... Then the referee positions himself between aforementioned opponents, he makes sure both are listening then states the following: "Ok, I want a nice clean fight, no low punches, no biting and no name calling or groin kicking..."

This is exactly what is needed on these forums (News24 - Opinion). At the moment, as far as I can see, whenever someone rights an Article on the Religion vs Atheism subject. It starts (and usually is) a merciless mud-flinging. So what I am going to attempt with this article is quite simple, lay down some ground rules for the engagement, and to ensure that it is in no way bias I will only give the 'Christian" statements as I am one myself and therefore cannot fully understand the Atheist viewpoint.

Please note that the following statements are my personal attempt at answering many basic atheist questions and problems concerning Christianity.

1. Please do not base an Article (in which you are trying to make a logical argument) on your own interpretation of scripture. I Have seen this happen in MANY anti-Christian and even some Christian articles. This will cause your entire argument to be based on your own opinion, even if you might have a valid point, it will make things difficult.

2. Many Atheists base most of their arguments on the behavior of "Christians" or the "Church". When you do so, please consider the following:  We believe that humans are not perfect beings and therefore cannot be flawless. (It's the basis of our religion!) Because of this we DO NOT believe that doing good things gets you into heaven. We try to do good things because we are thankful for God's mercy. However, as one of my favorite pastors once said: "In the end, there will be some bad people in heaven and some good people in Hell."  And just because someone says he or she is a Christian does not mean he or she actually is, they may go to church every Sunday and give money to the poor, and preach the gospel out loudly but that doesn't show who they really are on the inside. Do they go to church and act as a Christian because they really believe or do they merely confirm to the social norm of a mostly religious society? I Can write a book about people misusing the Church or the term "Christian" and I wouldn't cover half of it. So I shall leave that particular subject here.

3. We as Christians also believe that this debate will never end. God will never (until he "arrives") be conclusively proven, nor will he ever be conclusively proved not to exist.

I Will leave it at that for now. But I will (if News24 allows it) continue this series.

As for the comments, please don't start the mud flinging. And don't try to disprove God (If you want to do that, then write an Article) However, do feel free to state your problems or arguments and I will answer them as best as I can.

Yes I am a Christian and no I am ...

I am tired of people feeling like they can say what ever they want about Christians, that they can make fun of and joke about Christians, yet they would not dare do it to other faiths or denominations. Read more...
