The Unscientific ‘Gay Gene’

03 March 2014, 08:04
So I thought I’d take this opportunity to weigh in on a very topical discussion at the moment, the issue of the gays and alleged human rights violations in Africa.

Firstly, it must be said that any corporal punishment against someone’s choice of sexual lifestyle, leaves much to be desired.  I cannot honestly condone too harsh a sentence for those who are found to be breaking a country’s gay laws.

Having said that, today’s laws seem awfully subjective and only those who understand the ‘gay way’ should be in a position to judge.

But my research today, revolves around a dubious article posted this month in which it is alleged that a scientific discovery of the so-called ‘gay gene’, has been made.

Read the article here:  http://uk.news.yahoo.com/gay-gene-discovery-suggests-sexual-orientation-not-choice-085610185.html#1sUIwas

The major problem I have, is that as much as this article is palmed off as ‘science’, it leaves one feeling pretty bland at best, wondering what the hell kind of ‘scientists’ were behind these explorations.

Allow me to do the News24 unforgiveable - yes, the copy & paste trick from this article:

"Scientists have found evidence to support the existence of a male genome..."  The article starts strongly enough, affirming the assertion right off the bat, but then it all goes pear-shaped and the guesswork and ludicrous theorising starts…

“…which may influence homosexuality."

May?  Really?  Is this science or thumb-suck delusions?

But wait, there’s more:

"The study identified two areas on the male genome which appear to be linked to sexuality."

"Sexual orientation has nothing to do with choice. Our findings suggest there may be genes at play..."    Suggest?  May?  All sounds very ‘scientific’.

"Scientists at Northwestern also identified a second genetic region on Chromosome eight, which seemed to have an impact on whether a man is homosexual."  Seemed to?  Oh, okay then.

"...the research pointed to a biological root, but firm evidence was yet to be produced."

So as an agnostic, and a highly educated one at that, I certainly don’t come at this topic from any religious persuasion, but I have to question the credibility of this type of pseudo-science when everything is just hearsay with lots of maybes and assumptions.

If someone chooses to be a gay, that is their choice, not need to try involve ‘science’.

Just my thoughts…
