"They raped, pillaged and burned. They were savages."
How do we know? This is what the Christian monks wrote about them. The savages were however smart enough to navigate in the 8th century (before compasses) on ships, and their ships were technological marvels.
Of course if you're being defeated and overrun it helps to sell some propaganda to the king. So you wouldn't call them brave, or enterprising, or ambitious. Interestingly, thanks to their religion, they had zero fear of death, which was probably both a blessing and if your life was hanging in the balance, not necessarily the best thing.
Of course any group able to go to the trouble to invade another group is possibly stronger, smarterand in many ways better than the group being defeated. Yet even today, almost a thousand years later that propaganda still remains.
Don't believe *eveything* you hear.
